how good is that snipping tool!!

I found a cool little program today for replacing snipping tool, called greenshot. It's really nice as you can set a default save directory, so you can take a load of screenshots with a few clicks, without having to save after doing each one, like you might with the windows. Other features as well, but that (to me) is by far the most useful. Amusingly it was shown to me by a user who hadn't got that bit configured.

Also available for Mac

I've been using the Snipping Tool for this sort of thing, I usually access it by hitting the Windows key and typing in "snip..." and it comes up.

I just tried the Windows-Shift-S version, selected a part of the screen and... nothing happens. I can't seem to bring it back either; nothing happens when I hit the key combination again.

I think I will stick with the Snipping Tool.

well flip me I've just done it. No idea why I'm even reading the thread but so glad I did. This is a skill tip I can see me using often

cmd + shift + 4 on mine. So much easier than MS Snipping tool, if only because the file is saved automatically to desktop.
Cmd + shift + 3 = capture whole screen
Cmd + shift + 4 = capture area within the box you draw
Cmd + shift + 5 = launches Screenshot app to do a variety of things - capture image of whole screen/active window or app/cropped selection or record video of the same

Use it constantly

I only tend to use +4 as I never want to capture the whole screen. What was the last one (I presume that was a typo as +3 is whole screen)? Capturing video of the screen sounds like it could be useful.

Edited doh! Cmd + shift + 5 and then either navigate to the option you want with the mouse. Spacebar does something here too like cycles between title/window/touchbar capturebbef1342cb6a85b3287a590d0fd41d4c.png

Been hitting cmd + shift + 5 and it does nothing till it dawned on me... I'm using El Capitan right now so I'm stuck with Grab

I only just learned to use control + v last week but only cos the app i was using at work doesn’t let you do it the normal way. Dunno why they have it when it’s just as easy to right click n that. Why can’t there be just one way to do it?

Because keyboard shortcuts like control c and v are much faster. But agree its strange to force people to use them.

Don’t see how they are any faster

It takes more time to right-click and select cut/copy/paste from the drop-down menu. Whereas you can just hit the commands on the keyboard right off the bat, no need to faff around with silly little menus.

No it doesn’t if you’re used to it. It would take me a lot longer to think of using the other way and then perform the action than it would to use the method I always use, which takes seconds, using a well-worn neural path

It literally involves fewer physical actions that don't involve having to move as far. The difference isn't great, but if you're using a lot of such commands commands throughout the day, it adds up.

Its the neural path thing of course. Once you know it, it's quicker. If you don't of course your going to be slow. There's lots of keyboard shortcuts. It's when you start combining them it gets considerably quicker. But then you may not use a computer that much.

It’s not that much time even if you use it as often as I do. I use it, I dunno maybe ten or twelve times a day at work and use it loads on social media
