How do I buy a ticket on my phone mid journey

I'm on a train now. I've got a oyster pass that takes me as far as Bromley South and want to buy a return for the next part of the journey.

I'm sure I've done it in the past with the Trainline app but the only option it offers me is to pick up a ticket from Bromley.

I wasted time downloading the South Western Railway app and that piece of shit only gives me the option to download a ticket to some proprietary smartcard.

I'm trying to avoid hassle at the my destination so anyone got any ideas?

Show this thread then at least you have a time stamp of trying to be legit.

I'm sure I've done this in the past though. You'd think they'd be falling over themselves to be more environmentally friendly.

Not everywhere has QR code readers on the barriers to read e-tickets off of phones. Is that the issue?
