Have we reached Peak Guardian?

I’m buying the Sunday times weekly now and other than the twatty opinion pieces I think it’s a bloody good read. I know it’s murdoch, but it’ll be around long after him. I was always a guardian reader but the cloying smugness combined with articles on 100k kitchens and where you should winter break etc got on my tits. At least with the times there’s a sort of centrists consistency. The arts pages and the things they cover are broad and interesting. Journalism is so important. Nice to read something in paper where the staff are salaried and not grifting without the constant triggering that can happen online

It's fairly shite that they missed the mark with that quite so badly - many of us in the UK, especially those who don't eat meat, or who are on a tight budget, are likely to use chickpeas in their diet in some shape or form. And that is before even getting onto the fact that it is a staple crop across much of the world and some peoples' basic subsistence depends on it.

Also: clickbait headlines
Also also: overcasualised language (using 'super' as an adverb in a serious article, etc.)
But what really ended my relationship with Guardian was the emotional reporting. It was like 'from our own correspondent' (or whatever it's called) on BBC4 - I was weeping into my breakfast all the time. I still give Guardian my money but have mostly moved on to other news sources.

Theres no difference in terms of " cloying smugness combined with articles on 100k kitchens and where you should winter break etc got on my tits." That's all broadsheets. As to "centrists consistency" its often rabid IMO. And even more entitled. Some seriously punchable columnists. A rag best ignored unless they've got a Sunday scoop. They do occasionally break something its true. Thats not reason to buy it. Journalism is important but this isnt. Slippery path you are on there IMO... theres some clever, subtle and deliberate reframing of news that goes on that is part of the problem with the UK

Bought a copy of the New York Times the other day (international version coz I'm on holiday). 16 pages, and every single article was interesting. The quality of writing was noticeably fucking excellent.

Really put the Guardian into focus. I'll probably still check the website, but the ratio of shit articles to worthwhile ones is poor.

The quality of writing in the guardian is really appalling

I had actually been wondering if we had/should have a "why the NYT is going down the pan" thread, ever since seeing this brainscrambler of a headline:

Investing in real estate or becoming a landlord has inherent stress, especially in a volatile market. But many women seeking independence, especially after a breakup or divorce, have discovered emotional empowerment and even healing.

I'm so glad to think that my landlord might find being my landlord emotionally empowering. 💖💖💖
