Harry Roberts has been freed

And you don't think that a prisoner having expressed genuine remorse is going to be viewed by the PB as potentially being less of a risk than one who hasn't?

How do you discern whether "genuine remorse" is genuine? The Parole Board have to take a lot on faith, regardless of how much "expert advice" they have access to, and their main concern has to be with public safety and (inevitably) the public purse.

For sure, but they'll likely be supplied with countless reports from folk within the system, as you say, expert advice, on the character and progress of the subject. Sure, someone could fake remorse and they know that, but convincing remorse, genuine or otherwise, is likely to be a factor in satisfying a panel that a prisoner is a safer bet than one who shows none at all.

I'd like to sit on a parole board. The biggest challenge would be finding as many different ways as possible to say "no".

Some still keep mentioning that he has done his time - he was given a minimum of 30 years with the judge expressing hope that no home sec would ever release him. He knew he was in for ever, he is a violent utter cunt whose life has been meaningless - apart from the 3 old - bill he has destroyed other lives - fuck him, I would prefer he is locked up till he dies - he has no worth and I don't think he gives a fuck about any of his victims nor the general public - all those clamouring for his release - you think he appreciates you? Lol. That is what he is doing - lol - at you!

Hasn't stopped them interfering in operational matters, though. There's more than one way for the message to get passed down.

Unlikely in this case. What could she possibly hope to gain by supporting his release?

A fair bit to lose though:

The increasingly heated debate has refocused attention on home secretary Theresa May’s pledge to the Police Federation last year that the government intended to change the law so that “life should mean life for anyone who murders a police officer”.

Steve White, said that he was “appalled to learn that police killer Harry Roberts is being released from prison”, while May stated her belief that “anyone who murders a police officer belongs behind bars – and behind bars for life. That is why I have made sure the government will change the law so life will mean life for anyone who murders a police officer.”

Who's been clamouring for his release? I see some people going blue in the face that he should remain locked up and the others going 'meh, parole board decision innit, he's fucking 78 and done nearly 50 years anyway'. There has been no 'clamour for his release'.

I just don't see a problem with a 78 yo man, who's likely institutionalised, getting an early release. I don't think it's naivete. In fact given he's going to be completely fucked outside and alone, it's probably an even harsher sentence

No-one is "clamouring for his release", you moron. We're debating whether 48 years is sentence enough or not.
I don't know about Harry Roberts laughing at "us", I just know that I'm laughing at you, you posturing gimboid.

In the interests of poetic justice, I reckon his withered old frame should be pointed in the direction of Harry Stanley's killers, and he should be told that they called his mum a slag. :)

Apparently Roberts is fit as a fiddle and in excellent shape after decades of working out.

tbf i think ding ding was clamouring for his release. He's great him. Buy him a bag of crisps and let him round around the beer garden whilst the adults have a natter. He'll sleep well later.

Given that she's spent her time as Home Secretary going out of her way to deliberately alienate the Police Federation (and coppers in general - she sees the police and prison officers' unions as way too powerful), I'm not sure she's got much to lose at all. The OB can't strike, and too many doses of Blue Flu will see "efficiency savings" being made.

number of cops already declining.

Plus, even she realises that HR has to be dealt with according to the laws in place when he he was sentenced, and the recommendation of the judge in the case, who chose not to give him a whole life tarrif.

But certainly nothing to gain. No, I think the parole board have fucked this up all on their own.

Roberts could have been kept detained perfectly lawfully.

Haha do you not think I am laughing at you - you fucking no life cunt

By the way vp - by my own admission I just lowered myself to your standard and was nasty - I apologise - it's not how I like to be.

For the pedantics perhaps I should have used celebrating or happy or pleased or numerous other words instead of clamouring.

Probably. ViolentPanda ?

Not sure of the relevance of the question though.

The question is relevant because HR was sentenced to life with minimum of 30 years (not a whole life tarif), which means that after that time he can apply for parole and (as I understand it) the decision to release or not is in the hands of the PB, on the basis of whether they judge him to be a danger to public or not.

They have previously turned down his request (at least once) on the basis that he was then a danger, now they have granted it, presumably on the basis that he no longer is.

And that is why there is the reference above to changing the law so that from now on, all cop killers would automatically be given a whole life sentence, so they had no chance of parole, but that would only apply to those convicted after the new law was brought in, not retrospectively. You do get that, right?
