Grime and DnB: what's with all the rewinds?

My understanding was the (start of) A tune is played and if a 'forward' happens the whole thing gets played (i.e. 'we want to hear the whole thing, play it').

So now it turns out that a forward is a crowd surge, not a spin - never gave it much thought tbh, and I've never heard a spin forward, maybe that's a rewind-culture-centric supposition we've all made?!

Found this article here which throws some light. But praps I'm just recalling having seen some excitable 'wheels' in the past speeding up a tune rather than being 'pulled' back?!

The Mic Chatter (or MC) is the selector's right hand man (and visa-versa). He is responsible for introducing the records being played (intros), hyping up the crowd ("building vibes"), encouraging crowd participation in singing the popular tunes ("conducting choir"), and requesting that a record be stopped and played again immediately (also referred to as a "forward" or "wheel"). The MC duties at a dance are much like those of an MC at a live stage show - forwarding the records immediately upon indication by the crowd (much like an MC at a concert requesting an encore). The crowd requests a forward by screams, shouts, chants, whistles, holding up lit lighters, pounding on the walls, waving hand kerchiefs ("wipers"), lighting fircrackers, using airhorns, or even the firing of guns in the air (called "gun salutes"). The MC may also make announcements of upcoming events, tell jokes, control the crowd in the case of a dispute, and in some cases even make political commentaries. In a Sound Clash, the MC's role becomes even more crucial. In this setting he/she is responsible for verbally ridiculing his opponents (the other sounds) by taunting them (this practice is called toasting), or telling embarrasing jokes which may be true or not true (also called "drawing cards").

My theory is that the use of the word Forward was popularised by Kwame Nkrumah who helped win independence for Ghana and became its first prime minister, who had a slogan Forward Ever, Backward Never - a slogan which definitely reached JA

Theres also a Tubbys Dub called Forward On Dub (with vocals "Come Forward On"... but Im not sure what the original piece of that is)... both of those tracks predate the 80s Dancehall Forward

PURE SPECULATION :)

trying to remember that lyric "the big gun mean forward and **** mean rewind, you requested it so we rewind"
maybe on an SS tune

I wondered whether forward rather than backward might be a rasta thing, in the same way as "overstanding" rather than "understanding".

(It's thinking thoughts like this all the time that has prevented me from fulfilling my natural destiny as ruler of the world.)
that would be I-ward!
or maybe even

This is one of the few dnb tunes I'd like to get a double rewind on personally. that filthy, filthy reese. Sadly it rarely ever gets played out...

And spinbacks of the record you're mixing out of should be used more regularly in techno. Mills used to do it in some of his 90s mixes and it sounded fucking great

I've done a few epic funky house ones in my time (not to cover up mistakes either) :D!

They're generally used to cover up a mistake though!

And to confirm that, for removal of all doubt, this isn't the first time the DJ has 'topped up his personality' with cocaine.

I'd assumed this, never seen anyone manually spin the record forward.

I think I must be imagining it now/or conflating the concept of 'forward' - sure I've seen it happen though :hmm:  :D

Fozzie's reason for it being a 'forward' makes sense.

Going to a grime/dancehall/jungle night this weekend for a mates BDay. I'm hoping there's no more than 3 rewinds per hour - doubt it though. But as it's being held in a techno bunker a man can hope.

Just heard this tune get 3 rewinds on pirate station On Top FM ;)

its not terrible tbf - it would be better if someone else sang on it (his voice isnt awful either but it is a bit teenage), but there you go...i guess he gets to have the best producers out there write for him

The whole rewind and pull up thing is to:

1. Let the DJ show off that they have BIG tunes.
2. Give the crowd a chance to whoop/shout about the fact they know BIG tunes and are about to hear one. Again.
3. The call and response thing between DJ and crowd. Interaction. The DJ can ascertain whether or not the crowd are feeling it.

My take on it with grime is that having dubs is a big thing....... They produce them so quick you may only hear a dub once, so if its a good un, then wheel it the fuck up!
