Granville Arcade traders to be charged to stay open past 5:30pm

I would suggest contacting Cllr Nigel Haselden, who has responsibility for regeneration, http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/CouncilDemocracy/ElectedRepresentatives/Cabinet.htm

And the Brixton Business Forum c/o Devon Thomas devon.thomas@bteinternet.com

It will be a major signal if such a thriving opportunity with national publicity is seen to fail in Brixon / Lambeth. The council should be supporting you and championing you where possible. So many small businesses and livelihoods depend on this!

If the traders come together and speak with one voice, you might find you get heard.

I think bosie's post covered a lot of good points regarding this. fortyplus: I reckon you could do worse than printing off that post (with bosie's permission...?) and circulating it to other traders.

Someone has to either step forward or be nominated to be the mouthpiece for the traders. Maybe it doesn't even have to be someone who is there in the units, but someone closely associated. Maybe it can be a rotating responsibility (although I can imagine all heaps of trouble with that...).

Doing nothing ensures that nothing changes.

I imagine that the reason no one wants to take on that coordinating role is that (apart form being busy) all the traders have very different ideas of exactly what they want and on exactly which terms so finding consensus will probably be tricky. Which kind of puts the market owners' position into perspective too.

I would really try to avoid seeing this as a 'fight' as the owners are quite within their rights to walk away if it looks like becoming too much hassle. I hope you manage to get something sorted - late night opening is definitely worth it for the catering businesses.

Of course they are within their rights. They'd just be dumb to do so. Evening opening has been absolutely central to the current revival of the arcade, so making it too difficult or expensive will just kill it off, slowly and it'll revert to the half-empty ghost-town it was for most of the preceding twenty years.

Well I have no idea what's gone on between then and now but apparently BV is now open until 11.30/midnight Thursday to Saturday.

An outbreak of common sense by the sounds of it
Almost.
We did get together. Those of us open later will be paying quite a lot more (somewhat more than was originally proposed for 9.30 opening); but 11.30/12 is workable.
We still have issues, but there is now a channel of communication with the landlords other than just through the local manager.

Good luck FortyPlus and all traders.
I'm still working my way round all the places I want to try, and somewhere new has opened each time I come.
