Gossips, Dean Street: let's have your memories!

Gaz's rockin blues is still kicking isnt it? Round the corner at the st moritz club. Aint been in a coupla years, may have moved on.

St Moritz. Bless! That used to be part of the The Ship/Marquee/Gossips/Royal George/Astoria Soho axis of metallllll!

Ed's article on Gossips is what actually introduced me to Urban, after a Google session to find out what happened to the place.

I only went there once, in about 2003/4 on a weeknight, it was dead, but fucking brilliant. It was rather cavernous, tatty and basement like and I was surprised such a place existed in Soho. And with a name like "Gossips" I expected it to be totally shit in a kind of 18-30 way, but circa 1987, but it was a great place.

A good while later, I went back with some pals, but it had been all tarted up and changed to some kind of shitty glossy bar type thing with no soul. I don't remember what it was called then, maybe it was still under the "Gossips" moniker. It's a shame, as it was a good venue that was quite big.

Editor, the Batcave club night started in Brixton didn't it??? I only know of it because it was an early hangout for the largely forgotten band Flesh For Lulu. Did you ever have any run in's with them???

What is Gossips used for now??? I mean that big basement area is some prime real estate, I hope it isn't just sitting there doing nothing.

G’day Mick and Editor

Hard to image we didn’t meet at some point during those heady days, or rather nights, as I rarely left Soho during the 80’s! For much of the decade I worked in Soho sex shops (mostly Walkers Crt) and a beer at either Gossips, the Marquee or the St Moritz, often all three, after shutting shop was the norm.

I’d usually hook up with staff from the Marquee, many of whom also worked at Gossips – Martini and Helen McCourt spring to mind. Marquee security guy Chuck was another friend who either promoted a night or DJ’d at Gossips if memory serves.

I’ve dug up a few photos from the time but cant seem to post em here.

Good to hear from you. I went to a Quireboys gig a few weeks back and met up with a few of the old faces.

Let's not Forget 'Pterodactyl Presley'....used to run a Wednesday club night in 88. This is a gig on stage at Gossips - wish I had a better picture - Joey on Bass, Steve on Vox glamming it up - great fun.

Gossips was cool! A very young Vic Reeves did a support comedy gig warming up Pterodactyl Presley in '88. OK, Pterodactyl Presley didn't go very far, but Vic did OK! I have loads of great memories of Gossips Club - cool place during that era!!

I studied in London in the fall of 1990 and lived for Wednesday nights at Gossips for Hard Club 90. Does anyone know where Turx, Cindy, John, Ford and my favorite goth boys Alan and Anthony are now?

I have lots of amazing photos from December 1990 at Hard Club as well and will scan some to post. Editor, who are you, did you go to Hard Club and do you know the people I mentioned? Turx was a bartender and dated Cindy from Chicago.

Possibly the same Alan who is now one of the Organisers of Torture Garden but ran Goth night Psycho at Gossips around 1990?

I don't know what happened to Lenny who promoted the Hard Club or any of the others.

The article left out Severin's Kiss the fetish night which ran monthly at Gossips during the early 1990's:

Lenny from the Hard Club (Teresa Orlowski) also used to DJ on some of our nights.

Unless the Korsakoff's is kicking in i'm sure i posted on this thread?! Anyway...used to hang out down Wardour St (Ship, Intrepid, Astoria, Royal George) in my younger days (late 80's early 90's). Fucking loads of fun.

The Royal George was one odd pub. Garishly lit and not even slightly rock and roll, but there'd always been an ample quota of coiffured rockers there.
