Giving up shampoo and conditioner

Shirl

European
R.I.P.
There was a thread but it's 8 years old so I thought I'd start another.

My hair has been driving me mad for ages. I've hated my last two cuts but then I realised a few days ago that it's my hair that's the problem not the cut.
My hair has gone a bit 'fluffy'. I thought I was starting to look a bit Jimmy Savile  so I got it cut short but then I looked a bit Boris Johnson

To get rid of the fluff I'm just rinsing in the shower without shampoo and conditioner. It's only day 3 but my hair looks better. I don't know how it will look or feel long term so I'm wondering if anyone does this.
Ideas and tips welcome.

If it does work I'm going to be so fed up about all the money I've been spending on shampoo and conditioner :( but then I'll be happy at all the money I'm saving :)

My friend has been doing the no shampoo technique using bicarb and apple vinegar (you can find lots of info on this by googling 'no poo technique' and she has had success. Might be worth a go.

But the bicarb and vinegar will react, and be diluted by the water, so how does it work?

Have you tried a shampoo without SLS and parabens?
No, I know a few people who never use shampoo but use conditioner sometimes. They all have curly hair whereas mine is fine and straight. It definitely works well for curly hair although they sometimes condition to separate curls. I won't have that problem.

I wash my hair every day and use shampoo and conditioner. I couldn't imagine not doing that so I'd be really interested in hearing how you get on!

I wash and condition mine about once a week now, if i wash it much more than that it goes all dry and puffy, like you said.

Try just washing it less?
If I can't can by with never washing it I'll go for trying once a week. I'd rather give up completely though if I can.
I get my hair coloured about every 4 or 5 weeks so I'll probably have to to have it shampooed then.

Thread needs pictures

But yeah, I wash my hair twice a week maybe three times if I'm going out because it's very coarse and dry and even then it looks fluffy and frizzy. I gave up heat appliances for a few months when I was growing it for a wig charity and fucking hated it. Would love to do he no washing thing but I just hate the feel (and smell) of an unwashed scalp

I had to wash my hair daily with shampoo when I worked in the steelworks as it got covered in shite every day. I stopped using shampoo/conditioner after I left there and my hair has generally been better for it. I end up using shampoo maybe 3-4 times a year after knocking walls down, chasing out plasterwork or other really dusty jobs, and then it takes a week or two for it to come back to its normal state.

I just wash it in water generally and it seems great for it

Until recently I washed it every day. I had started washing every other day and liked it better on the second day.
As I've got older and my hair seems to have got finer and thinner, I've tried to do less and less with it.

I gave up having it dyed, bleached, highlighted over a decade ago as it was looking more and more like candy floss and was breaking. Found that only using conditioner and no shampoo helped sometimes. Since then I've gradually increased the amount of time between washes and now wash it once a week using very little shampoo / conditioner. I've also started to really brush my hair everday, even though it's cut so short, mostly because it feels nice. I try to dry it naturally most of the time. Though I do use straighteners, as they do see to make it look sleeker and better, usually just after I've washed it and later in the week when it starts to stick out in unflattering ways.

I use pound shop Simple shampoo and conditioner, but wouldn't rate it much, its ok. I've tried products that promise 'volumnising' 'sleek', 'shiney' or 'extra moisurising conditioner 'results - but often find they make my skin or eyes itch and my hair look no better. Would like to find a simple inexpensive product/s that works better too.

I can't remember the last time i used shampoo or conditioner on my hair. Water only, either in the shower or the bath. I use a hair product to style my hair so it isn't flat on my head

I hate the way shampoo makes my hair feel, I have really fine hair and i don't like the plastic feel it has after shampoo

I wash my hair about once a week, with Neutrogena T-Gel. My hair is very short.

A friend washes it less than once a month, has mid length hair and it always looks fine.

I have to wash mine every time I've cooked - can't stand cooking smells on my hair or clothes. I only shampoo every 2 - 3 days but use conditioner every time.

a friend of mine has not used shampoo for about 15 years
he uses product sometimes to style it

I am interested to know if anyone gets on with the bicarb and vinegar
I am swimming a lot lately and my hair is feeling rubbish and not washing well
I may buy some now and try it after my swim
will report back

I wash mine almost daily. I always use conditioner. But it's getting dry to the touch now. I'll need to give the bicarb a try.

I don't think my hair needs cleaning. When I'm polishing silver my hair used to get dyed orange/pink so I always had to shampoo after a polish. Now I wear a beanie and pull it right down to cover all my hair.
I don't smoke or cook or live in a city so my hair doesn't come across much dirt.

Well I did take two bottles into the shared shower and one of them was a large bottle if vinegar

My hair is still wet after the swim and smells a bit chlorine-vinegar but it feels nice

I will see how it behaves in the morning

When my hair was long I couldn't wash it more than once every 5 days or so or it never fully dried as it's so thick. Now I've had 3/4 cut off I've got to wash it every 3-4 days as it actually feels dirty.

I never shampoo weebles hair, just half a bottle of conditioner to tame the curls.

I don't use conditioner, but shampoo every day. I stick a dollop of VO5 Rework in afterwords to spike it a bit though, so there's bugger all chance of it going 'fluffy'.
