Germany v Portugal

Portugal made some dreadful mistakes defending and were trying to flash shots in from 30 yards. Still, that third German goal was a definite foul. :(

FFS! I just don't want to see Lehman holding the cup :mad::mad:

Why oh why oh why oh why does Nani only ever get brought on at the 70min mark? He was hugely influential in the last 20mins and had he come on at half time or, dare I say, from the start, Portugal may have won it!

I will miss Portugal - for me the most entertaining and skillful side in the competition - pure football magic. Deco, Nani, Ronaldo, Nano Gomes, Simao, Postiga and Ferreira - all breathtaking. Oh well - at least there is now the chance of a Germany v Turkey clash! Would love to be in Dusseldorf for that one...

A game of 2 captains? Only one of them was worth his weight in gold tonight.

What's most impressive has to be Germany not having a manager. And the extreme measures taken by EUFA to make sure it stayed that way were new to me but fair enough I suppose.

Germany should walk the semi but I can't see them beating Holland in the final. Saying that, I thought this one would be much closer.

Yep, Nani on the left and Ladyboy on the right. Could have been good. :(Portugal haven't got anybody to blame but themselves, though that third goal foul looks worse and worse the more you see it.

Always sad when the most entertaining side goes out. :(

C'mon Spain!

Can I just make the point that Ballack is remarkably eloquent in English after only two seasons and that he seems to have a maturity and communication in interviews that is in stark contrast to most other footballers. It's entirely in line with his attitude on the pitch too.

From the Guardian's MBM but well worthy of plagiarism:

"If Portugal's No10 swapped shirts with the German full-back at the end of the game," begins Jona Steenbrink, "would that be Moutinho dressed as Lahm?"

The best team won, really. Portugal suffered with the "rest", and it's hard to explain why a "rested" Bosingwa lost in speed to an allegedly injured Podolski more than a few times. Ricardo finally fluked a cross that ended up costing a goal (which pretty much sealed the deal for Germany) and Ronaldo is a git who'll still believe he has the divine right to do everything in the national team until there's a coach willing to bench him instead of making him captain.

There were a few things to be learned from here. Ricardo, Petit and Nuno Gomes should call it a day. Ferreira (at least as a left defender), Simão, Meira and Love-Handles Miguel should no longer be first choices/regular call-ups. Moutinho, Meireles and Nani should become first-team players. Carvalho should be the captain - this isn't a japanese manga where the best player is automatically the captain, FFS.

Yet another belter of a match!

Personally after watching this thoroughly enjoyable and thrill a minute match. I reckon Germany quite deservedly won this quarter final. Thus proving one of the most used phrases in the football lexicon. "You can never, ever write off the Germans ". Especially when it comes down to the business end of the major tournaments.

Ricardo (and the defence) who i had a doubt on his/their ability to deal with quality set pieces, goes awol out of his goal line with another teasing delivery from Schweinstiger (just shaded Ballack for man of the match imo) that ended with the immense Ballack to score the killer third goal. Although the replays showed it was a clear push on Paulo Ferreira before he headed the ball into the net.

As for C. Ronaldo,. He was peripheral throughout the 90 mins, apart from being involved and certainly didn't justify his "best player in the world" tag. Especially when his country needed him most to provide & poduce the goods. Btw some frank & honest words from Silva about the winker & your national team!. I quite agree that he was at fault for the second Germany goal for not picking up the run of Miroslav Klose. I shook my head when Townsend with his "tactic board" blamed Carvalho - Portugal's best defender for the two set piece goals. You can also attribute Pepe for his marking on the first of the goal as well. It was woeful & awful defending from the team who were favoured to win this game.

Portugal certainly didn't bring in their A game in this match and Gary Neville in the ITV studio who made some good analysis of the match was right when he said that Portugal didn't have a plan B after that blitzkrieg 30 minute start by die Mannschaft. Plus the great Eusebio succinctly said that all his country needs is a natural or out & out goalscorer.

Deco - for his excellent & creative game play didn't deserve to be on the losing team. He certainly proved that he's got plenty to offer, whichever team buys him in the summer.

As for the Germans i thought Phillip Lahm had another good match, he won his intriguing battle with Jose Bosginwa - who at times got skinned by the industrious & lively Lukas Podolski. Schweini (aka Pig farmer) had a great game, scored a superb team goal & of course two assists. He certainly owned his team one after his stupid sending off against Croatia in the group stage.

So ze Germans are through to another Euro Semi-Finals. And certainly they're back on track, even though there are a few uncertainties in their defence & at times in their midfield. They could get exposed by a more dynamic midfield team, especially on the counter attack imo. Yet another quality match in tournament that's emerging to be a classic.

Ain't read thread.

Blatant push shame the officials missed it, might have been a different story.

But, Germans were the better side anyway.

The Ballack foul was a carbon copy of the one committed by Güiza when scoring the winning goal for Spain the night before. Curiously, the commentators managed to spot this one and discuss it at some length.

Incidentally, does Schweinsteiger mean "piglifter"? I was hoping for "pigsticker" but a brief glance at the dictionary still seems to yield a reasonably amusing translation.
