Frasier 2.0

Might binge it on a Paramount+ 7 day free trial when it's all available.

I loved some of Frasier, not all, and the fucking reruns, Jesus.

Went to look for Frasier on YouTube. All the eposodes used to be on it. Now there are only clips.

Does everyone not realise that Daphne's brothers' accents was a joke about British accents on American TV?
That doesn't make them any less irritating.
Not just their accents but their antics..
Waste of time flying in Robbie Coltrane to talk gibberish.
Sloppy writing on a series that was usually very clever and witty generally.
Even their title cards were inventive..
With well over 250 episodes one should expect a few duds of course.

He's back, does anyone care? Might take a look, mainly because that bloke who played Rodney in Only Fools and Horses is in it.
Frasier and Rodney worked together back in 2019..
On stage in The Man of La Mancha at the London Coliseum ...

Will still give it a shot but expectations are being lowered in preparation…

Also, it’s odd they didn’t get the original actor to play Freddie given he’s still actually an actor: Trevor Einhorn | Actor

the first one was pretty crap. Niles' son is very crap and the actor not very good. The others could grow into their roles.

Yep first episode as bad as I feared…it’s just relentlessly unfunny, and lacks the brilliant writing of the original…

Started the second episode and gave up after five minutes, it’s just not written with any love for the characters; it’s deeply unfunny…

I wasn't a huge fan, but I did watch it all, and recently accidently watched this two hour (yikes) assessment. . .

Disappointed to hear the new series is trash, but the trailer makes it fairly obvious that it falls into standard boring spin of tropes (even though its only the main character spinning off)

The moment I see the words Lucy Mangan on a review I cringe. If she gives anything 5 stars the people in the comments bit are usually giving it one star, including me.

Anyway, she loved it.

It took three attempts but I finally finished the first episode, then watched the second one straight afterwards.

Personally, I didn't hate it but the opening episode was as clumsy an introduction as the opening episode of Frasier was deft, and there were some bits (Freddie not going to his grandfathers' funeral being the worst) that really made no sense whatsoever. Having Niles' son be a more annoying version of Niles was also a terrible, terrible idea (the bit in the airport was what made me switch off at when I first tried to watch it), as was forcing Frasier's work and home life together as they did.

That said, I will keep watching it - there were a few bits where it almost felt like an episode of old Frasier.

Given the prevailing sentiment so far in the thread, I make the following comment with great apprehension. But whereas it will never, ever be 1% as good as the original, by episode 4 it has at least evolved into a watchable, not awful standalone American sitcom. Still very formulaic and unremarkable, but not worse than many other US sitcoms out there.

I tried to episode 4 and just don't find it funny. The replacement characters just aren't good enough, though I give them credit for not entirely trying to replace all the original characters - some are very similar (esp Freddy to Martin) but it's not like Richard Curtis movies where it's always the exact same character sheets just played by different actors.

I think the first brother with the terrible Cockney accent was genuine terrible casting, but the rest was definitely intentional.

I’m not saying it’s a great comedy (or is likely to be), but for what is worth I found it to at least land the odd joke that raised a short laugh. By comparison, I genuinely don’t remember laughing even once when watching such established sitcoms as How I met Your Mother, or Everybody Loves Fucking Raymond, to name but two.

That's a bar so low fleas hit their heads on it.

That’s a fair comment I guess :D Though I wouldn’t be surprised if there were plenty of people here who think How I Met Your Mother is a very good sitcom. It certainly enjoys overall critical ratings that are incomprehensible to me.
