Fountain pen - recommendations

Pen is now filled with water. no obvious leakage yet. I also noticed some gunge on the nib so I've left it sitting a while in the glass of water.

Shoud it work fine, I'd need to make a decision on ink. affordable is pretty high on the list of priorities. as is black. blue ink and I are not freinds

Diamine 30ml bottles aren't too expensive. Or cheaper, still, buy some boxes of mixed cartridges, until you find a colour you like.

Probably going to be Quink then, as it's cheap and easily available. Not sure about permanency though. Some blacks fade like buggery, some don't. I'm sure our ink mavens will be along soon with recommendations. :)

Myself, I use a nice purple iron gall ink by Rohrer and Klingner that rejoices in the name "scabiosa", but that's because I'm a bit pretentious. :)

Quink Black is actually okay - it's the same as Waterman Black these days, it works, and it's a little more waterproof than the blue and blue-black (which just entirely dissolve in the face of water). It's not all that dark though.

Well done!!! :D

I meant just to see a range of colours.

No I didn't. Who am I kidding? I am a little 'tired and emotional' this evening.

Although you didn't kick me when we were in Tesco's and I stood in the middle of the fruit and veg aisle performing an obscene mime with a large leek.

nope, i walked away and left you so engrossed in your performance that it took you qite some time to realise i was no longer standing there

Ah, but you can never escape the fact that you are now publicly known as the significant other of the notorious Phantom Leek Fondler of Truro...

Something of a Pyrrhic victory for me, I know, but we don't always win hands down.

i may well see what is available in one of the local art shops. there really isn't any other options here other than staples or smiths for stationary type stuff

You don't get much unless it's on the net these days. Even art shops don't do much fountain pen ink - just drawing ink.

looks like i'll need to order then.

you see, i wouldn't have known there was a difference between writing ink and drawing ink

Oh, yes - drawing inks, like the Windsor & Newton you see in art shops all the time, are meant for use with dip pens, and with brushes, and in other circumstances where there are no little capillaries to be clogged. If you fill a fountain pen with them it will rapidly gum up and be very hard to clear.

I'm going to finally take the plunge and get some pens... Largely because I'm doing Open University law and feel I should master a nice chancery hand. Probably a Lamy studio with EF nib for everyday use (not the platinum one) and a rotring art pen because I've always liked messing around with them. Maybe also one of those cheap carbon ones for er... carbon ink.

Also my mum has a Mont Blanc, wedding present from my dad (who's been dead 12 years), so I er... don't want to fuck it up. Diamine ok? Actually it already is a bit fucked, I don't suppose any urbans know the price for repairing out of warranty mont blancs (barrel damage)?

What exactly is wrong with it?

pic there.

it looks a lot like it is still in good working order as well. there's a lot of dried ink coming out of it now it's soaking in water, but absolutey no sign it's leaking and it looks like it's drawing in a reasonable amount of water.

i'm fairly certain it's got a broad nib, it's certainly wider than anyhting else i've written with.

and it looks in pretty good condition for the amount I used to chuck it about the place. I can't see anything significant in the way of dings. and the nib seems to still work smoothly

Great! Looks like a Parker 51, that's my favourite fountain pen. :) I've got a blue one with a nib that's so smooth you can hardly feel it when it puts down ink. I've had others which haven't been like that; I suppose I was lucky with that one.

Cracks in the main resin body, proper cracks I mean, not just surface ones.

Worth a try <shrugs>

Philistine!

I could probably do a fair job with epoxy and 0000 wire wool tbh, but I think I'll leave it. Give it a try as is and see if it works, not like I'll be taking it out of her flat or anything.

Ta for the links Athos, I'll give them a ring at some point.

Tbh I think a lot of their pens look pretty crap, but this is a Meisterstuck, which i rather like. The sailor 1911 looks exactly the same... :hmm:
