Fountain pen - recommendations

toggle said:
Found my pen, thought the ex had nicked it, but it turned up in a box of stuff I went through last week. Last time it was used was probably about 18 years ago. I was using it daily when i was doing a levels, but i cannot remember having used it since. and certainly not in the last 10 years.

i'd suspect it could do with a bit of TLC before I use it again.

If I was you, I'd consider replacing the sac (or diaphragm if it is a vacumatic style filler). If it's loose or damaged, things could get messy! And that will give you a chance to check that the breather tube its not damaged or blocked.

I got £20 off my Ma at X-mas and bought a Parker Frontier with bottle of ink and cartridge convertor for just over that sum at Amazon. First fountain pen I've had since I was about 10 - a joy to write with. Once my handwriting improves (one of the reasons for buying it) I may upgrade to one of the handsome examples mentioned on this thread! :)

30 seconds in a microwave just to get the ink warmed up . . . it is winter afterall

Significant risk of the cartridge being made of non-microwaveable platic, though. :)

'Twas said in jest VP, granted the smiley was missing

what is the purpose of the washing up liquid?

Not only will this clear out any gubbins from inside the pen, but, it could significantly reduce the surface tension of the ink (look at a drop of ink and its meniscus) - that will also improve the ink flow

Flush the pen through with some warm water with a tiny amount of washing up liquid, then flush thoroughly with lots of cold water.

A chap in Galeria Kaufhof in Berlin's pen dept recommended film wetting agent (apparently contains fewer salts than commercial washing up liquid, but just as much surfactant).

i'd consider that if i had a clue where to start doing that.I've never done anyhting before other than stick ink in it and write with it. and try to loose it a few times

Could be. But most of is have access to washing up liquid, but not film wetting agent. And, if it's rinsed thoroughly, I think it'll be OK.

It might not need one. Just give it a visual examination, and then fill with water for a day or so, so that you're confident it won't leak, before inking it. If you do need a new sac, I'd install one for you; you'd just have to pay parts and postage.

if i need to, i'll take you up on that. it's a lovelly pen and i really don't want to mess it up by not knowing what i'm doing

Now that I've told the internet, not any more.

:p

You're obviously out of practice w/r/t diplomatic relations with the daughters of Lilith, mate. For future reference, there are many things that you must keep to yourself. Usually this includes the foibles of your partner, even if they are cute and endearing. :)

Oi! Not even my foibles are cute, bastard!

it was all about rmembering where i had left the car in a large car park, where i park in a different place every time i visit and was using the place 3-4 times a week. this was while someone was attempting to distract me with suggestions of what could be done with carrots that would make a dockside whore blush. I will make no apologies for not rememberwing where i had parked under such trying circumstances.

'There is, I think you'll agree, a certain je ne sais quoi about a fine, young carrot.'

i don't think i want to aggree with you on anything to do with carrots

I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees...

I tried to like my Lamy 2000 all day today, & failed.

The nib is genuinely unpleasant. Inconsistent, & slightly... gratey... on upstrokes. Requires too much pressure to write tidily to ensure a nice ink flow. Even though I'm pretty darned sure the nib's tines are as they should be.

I don't like my 2000 F either. Lamy are not good with fine nibs ime. On the other hand, my M and B are a pleasure to write with.

So, obviously, being a modest person, you had a "fit of the vapours" right there and then!

Pen is now filled with water. no obvious leakage yet. I also noticed some gunge on the nib so I've left it sitting a while in the glass of water.

Shoud it work fine, I'd need to make a decision on ink. affordable is pretty high on the list of priorities. as is black. blue ink and I are not freinds

My favourite black ink is J Herbin Perle Noire. You can get it in big 100ml plastic bottles, too - http://thewritingdesk.co.uk/showproduct.php?brand=Herbin&range=bottled+ink+100ml&cat=ink - a tenner, but that will last indefinitely. There are smaller bottles as well.

Noodler's Black is also a good ink, and more durable, though a little more expensive - http://www.pelikanpens.co.uk/acatalog/Black_Inks.html. It can be diluted with water quite effectively, though, and still stays black.
