Former players...

Just reading Journeyman by Ben Smith. He admits in his early days his lifestyle was inappropriate and he didn't do any extra training etc. to compensate. The Reading reserve team boss, Alan Pardew who Ben clearly rated, used to tell him he'd blow it big style like a player he'd met in non league called Peter Garland if he didn't wake up.

It’s not true is it?
It was on wikipedia yesterday and no longer there. So I guess this person just copied whatever was on wikipedia

The problem is there are no records that I’m aware of of the junior sides that players like Alan Simpson (Steptoe & Son) turned out for so it goes on what an individual says. All the obits mention it so whether than came from their files or Wiki I don’t know. Think I might check out Motty’s autobiography and see what it says in there.

It was put on Wikipedia seemingly out of nowhere, I spent many hours of my day off yesterday replying to various outlets, and John Lawrence has confirmed there is no connection.

A friend of mine recalls reading an interview with Martin Tyler, who played charity games with John Motson, in which Tyler commented Motson was quite a poor standard footballer.

Given John's age, Hamlet probably only had a first, second and youth team. It's unlikely a poor standard player would have been selected to enter into that set up.

He would have been a teenager in the mid-sixties, when Roy Hodgson and Bob Houghton were briefly in our reserve team as youngsters. A think the third team was an 'A' team, rather than a youth team, but would have consisted of youngsters and triallists captained by a veteran whose first team days were over. Even though our first team was at its weakest ever, due to our refusal to partake in shamateurism, I'm sure we'd still have had enough genuine amateurs to field respectable reserve and A teams. I suppose Motty may have got as far as a trial match, as Alan Simpson did when he played in goal in an 8-5 defeat and wasn't invited back!

Jamie Mascoll has left Lewes.

Wouldn’t mind seeing him back here for the remainder of the season.
Assuming he's as effective as he was when we had him on loan 4 years ago. Why has he left Lewes if he hasn't joined anyone else yet, and why had he dropped to that level in the first place? He was at Wealdstone for the second half of last season but didn't seem to make much of an impression there.

Right now we just need quick fix solutions for the next two months, so it's possible he might offer something there. Suddenly everything feels like a desperate gamble now.

Always liked how he played.
Agree. I was at a game on Saturday where the opposition back three had no football whatsoever in them. Head it away, kick it away, maybe try a six yard ball. Very limited.

Very pleased for Jesse as he's always tried to bring some football to being a centre half and I wish him well.
