Lucas wanted to do it, didn't he?

He did and when he couldn't get the rights off De Laurentiis, he made Star Wars instead. More intriguingly the first director attached to that project was Frederico Fellini.

And then there's the Dune connection. Lucas couldn't get that, either.

Luckily, we got Star Wars.
