Finding places to stay, ideas

I’m in a situation where I have a “good” job in London (just over 30k who sounds rubbish but I’d never get that where I actually live) but can’t move there because I have a child who lives 50/50 with me and my ex elsewhere. I travel to London for work in my hybrid job 3 days a week and stay over 2 nights for this. I was doing cheap hotels which was a bit shit, I was losing money and it was a bit lonely just walking from work to a hotel to fall asleep early. I want to socialise but that means spending less money on accommodation to make up for that. I’ve thought about hostels where they have a few beds in one room. I’d be up for that if I could do that and at least I’d have a warm bed even if it would mean I have to stuff my phone in my bra or something.

I occasionally stay with friends but can’t do this all the time. Is there any other option? Any ideas?

there are some people who have a spare room and want a part time lodger (i had a similar arrangement here at one time - was an en existing friend who got a job in this part of the world around the time i got made redundant) - it settled on his usually being here about 3 - 4 nights a week rather than him living here (if you see what i mean) - that sort of arrangement suits some people who want a bit of extra income but don't want a full time thing, rather than landlords who want to get the maximum income.

(and i'm near reading and the spare room is now more of a storage facility than a spare bedroom, so no i'm not offering)

there is a london flatshare thread here, and a brixton one here.

may be worth a look on the likes of gumtree and spareroom, although beware of scams and dodgy people. airbnb might be an option, i've never had dealings with it and there are horror stories out there.

What days do you stay over in london? What standards and budget do you have?

Currently, I stay over Wednesday and Thursday nights. My standards are pretty low, I don’t require facilities, if I need to I’ll shower at work. I’m happy with a large cushion on the floor to sleep on. A toilet would be nice but I’ve lived on a boat before so I can handle pre-Victorian levels of plumbing. I am aware this makes me sound quite weird, or maybe I just sound very relaxed, I don’t know!

My budget is low-ish. The cheap hotels that were crippling me were £55-65 a night.

I forgot to mention that I occasionally get invited to a friend’s house if we are to go out late to a club, so I don’t need something every night I’m in London

I may be up for making an offer. A part time lodger could suit me well. I’m in a house in south west london near a tube. Cat and smoker household.

Have a think. Send a PM if interested. :)
