Film recommendations that don't require much language

AFAIK most of the world watches a lot of English speaking films, so I think just persevere and his language will improve gradually. It might be possible to get prints of English films with Kurdish/Turkish subtitles, so long as they aren't too dialogue heavy it might help his English and get him through the odd scene.

I totally agree with this. When I came to the UK I barely spoke any English but I made a point of not reading any books in German, listening to UK radio all day long and to only watch English films and telly and within a few months my English was much improved.
 
The thing is though, we're not watching films in order for him to learn English, we just want to relax in the evenings. My Turkish is at at intermediate level, I guess, and I still don't usually want to watch films in Turkish as my brain gets too tired, they speak too fast and there are too many words I don't know.

I think once you are in another country where you don't speak the language, it's a good idea take any opportunity to learn. Films and telly are a great opportunity to learn a language because you learn it within it's own context rather than via translation and its more fun than lessons. I work with a lot of Foreign language speakers who keep themselves immersed in their own language, separating learning and entertainment and it takes them much longer to improve heir English skills than it took me. A Spanish guy I worked with who was good at his job, recently did not get re-hired because the bosses got frustrated with his poor language skills. I always saw him only checking out Spanish websites and telly in his breaks. I'd worked with him for two years and his English never improved much beyond the most basic.
 
I have watched some...but I don't understand the Turkish humour :-( So even if I understand the joke, it usually isn't funny. They make some good dramas though.

Or....if I'm going to be serious....something like Run Lola Run is action packed, low on dialect and subtitles.....

Films are for idiots anyway. I watch loads. It does nothing but give me false hope. Romantic false hope, with violence and space ships. Rubbish. I'll never go to a galaxy far far away and never kill rich nasty girls to impress Winona Ryder......and The Corleone's were not a nice family having a tough time....they were thugs and murderers. It's all a big bloody lie!
 
I was just thinking the same and was doing a search for David Attenborough. Looks like you can download sub-titles :hmm:
 
I had a go at downloading subtitles but couldn't get them to work. Does anyone know how to do it? I mean do I have to download the film with subtitles in the first place, or can I download the subtitles separately?

I've downloaded Planet Earth for us to watch...we did start watching one last night but it was all about plants and a looooot of talking that he wanted translated ..gave up in the end.

It depends on what software you're using to watch the film or show. If you go to somewhere like subscene.com, look for the subtitle file whose name matches your movie file (eg. Axxo). You may need to change the file name to match the movie file for it to work.

I'll post some links and better explanations when I get home.

You're watching the wrong kind of films. I watch mainly Kieslowski. Mostly I'm just glad to be alive.

Conquest 1453 is all right if you like epic battle movies, Once Upon A Time is a great movie, very very slow but sprinkled with Turkish humor, Three Monkeys was a bit of a downer.

You can get subtitles from a lot of places but I mainly get mine here http://www.opensubtitles.org/en

Depending on your setup you place the subtitle file in the same folder as the movie and you need to have the same file names
e.g
conquest1453.avi
conquest1453.srt

also you need to download the correct version of subtitle to match the movie file downloaded.
