Just reviewing last night's action. GB's hope in the discus Lawrence Okoye threw three no-throws in the heat and is out. We've never been much good at throwing have we?

What else interesting is happening in the throwing and jumping stuff?

Why do the high jump and pole vault still have bars... can't they just use lasers or photography to determine how high they actually jump, which is always going to be higher than the bar, and sometimes their highest jumps might not be when the bar is at its highest.

Because it's not about the height jumped, it's about the height cleared. It's literally in the rules. They are 'vertical clearance events'. The bar has been used traditionally since these events began. You can touch the bar as long as it doesn't fall off. Touching a laser would presumably produce a fail. Not the same thing, don't mess around with something if it isn't broken.

I'm just saying maybe it should be about height jumped, now we have the technology to measure that accurately. Imagine if the long jump was clear this line in the sand - it would be a bit silly.

How do you accurately measure the height jumped of a bent body? Which bit of the body are you measuring? And at what point? How would the athlete know this?

Long jumps are arguably less accurate. They are measured by 'disturbance of sand' which is why jumpers often land a bit weirdly and do their best to immediately urge themselves forward on landing. They should land in the same plasticine stuff that marks a foul. They could always be hosed down after every jump.

Athletics on acid, like it.
That makes no sense unless you're watching the track. Wrong thread I guess.

Might have a women's triple jump world record today, the last jump by Yolimar Rojas was a foul being 13cm over the board but was like 30-40cm longer than the WR.

Both deserved it & was good to see. Two peeps going mental rather than just one.

Barshim has gone from Bronze to Silver and now Gold in the last 3 Olympics, and been the dominant high jumper for a decade. Rare for a Qatari athlete to not be “bought in” African, Wikipedia at least states he’s born in Doha. Graceful jumper, deserves his Gold.
