Montreux Jazz Festival
Montreux website

I went to this once. It’s absolutely fantastic! Although it has little Jazz. It’s on the Swiss Riviera and the women are amazingly good looking and Versace clad and there are often traffic jams of Ferraris. It is approximately £5 a pint and only Heineken is available. There are brilliant free outside stages and loads of food stalls. Inside they have just about every decent band going and disappointingly little Jazz, which has been relegated to a Casino at the other end of the festival. My main tip for this festival is if you need to go to the loo really badly and cant be bothered to go to the public ones walk directly into the Montreux Plaza Hotel like you own the place and use their incredibly fancy bogs instead. While populated by millionaires and Eurotrash it’s actually a good festival in terms of atmosphere. It does at times feel like a James Bond film. I loved it!! Apparently its good to take the train into the mountains etc but that costs £40. It is nice to go for a swim in Lake Geneva though. Anyway it’s great!

William - Thank has to be the best summary of Glasto, that I've ever read.

A big thank you to Tort and hopefully, I'll catch up with him at Glasto again this year.

What's that Beautiful Days festival like and how much does it cost? I can't find any price info on the site.

The festival is excellent. We went for the first time last year, and despite some slightly dodgy weather, we had a great time. Music a good mix of folk/rock/reggae/punk/alternative/political/festival-friendly bands generally. There is also a good dance tent on a hill at the side of the site with class DJs. The festival site is really nice (grounds of Escot, a country house near Exeter, whose owners get on well with the Levellers/festival organisers). If you ever went to Glasto a few years back the vibe and atmosphere is similar to how the Green Fields used to be. My recollection is that the the tickets cost about £60= for the whole weekend, I know the Levellers are keen not to cost them too severely, but they are expanding the numbers by a few thousand this time so I don't know how much the tickets will cost for 2005. Worth keeping an eye on the BD website for updates. Also worth subscribing to On The Fiddle (Levellers fan club on their own website) because that entitles you to early release and discounted tickets.

Agree with everything William says but also worth pointing out that it is currently only a 2-day fest. There was talk of expanding it to 3-days this year but not sure if that has got off the ground yet.

A lovely laid back little fest & I'm more than a little sad that I won't be there this year. There's a link to some of my photos from last year on the offical boards if you're interested in taking a look.

Thanks. I'll definitely keep looking as it's only a couple of hours drive and it sounds good. Do people really hire tipi's?

Fair point about the 3 day thing, the Levs are pretty optimistic that they'll get a licence for that, and for the increased numbers. So that might affect the price ... Watch this space!

'... while they run about at the Dionysiac festivals as if they had let out their ears to hear every chorus; whether the performance is in town or country -- that makes no difference -- they are there.'

I read this today and thought of this thread. Great stuff :D

Looks like so far they've just confirmed the date and not much else -- any news on licence progress TeeJay??
I haven't heard anything yet, but I am sure that it will just be an issue of *money* again - ie how much the council want to charge in fees and deposits. Also maybe some wrangling about the finish time etc. If I hear anything I'll let everyone know.

Cheers TeeJay :)

All outstanding updates now added, the original list has now grown so long that I was forced to split it and replace/take over my original post seven to accomodate the second half of it.

Keep that information coming folks!! :)

JayDay (Legalise Cannabis Festival) on Saturday May 7th looks like for now at least that it has just been CANCELLED

Statement from Lambeth Coundil, issued today (February 24)

Lambeth Council said:

Date: 23 February 2005

Press Statement

Cannabis Festival

While Lambeth Council supports freedom of speech and the right to take part
in a legitimate campaign, the council cannot condone illegal activities
such as cannabis use and drug pushing - both of which have taken place at a
previous festival held by the Cannabis Coalition. Indeed council officers
monitoring the event in the past were approached by drug dealers who
offered them drugs.

Brockwell Park is one of our best-used and well-loved parks and is popular
with families. When the festival has taken place before we have received
numerous complaints from local people who have been harassed by drug
dealers and we have received many reports of people taking drugs. These
issued have been raised with the event organisers. We do not feel confident
that the Cannabis Coalition will be able to prevent such incidents occuring
again.

We have a duty to ensure that any event taking place in the borough is not
being used to support illegal activity - which drug dealing and drug use
clearly is. Similarly we have a duty to do all we can to make sure that
residents can go about their daily lives safe in the knowledge that they
will not suffer undue harassment. It is for these reasons that we have
refused the Cannabis Coalition permission to hold their event in Brockwell
Park.

The Wickerman Festival takes place near Kirkcudbright (south west Scotland) from 22-23rd July, so far the line up includes The Stanglers and Dreadzone. I went for the first time last year and it was great fun, very laid back and they even burn a giant wickerman at the end!!

sajeta 05

If anyone's in Eastern Europe why not try the sajeta festival (1st - 6th august) nr Tolmin in Slovenia (next to Italy). Nice chilled out atmosphere, a river/beach to swim in and gorgeous mountains if you fancy a break. ~20,000 people.

Website hasn't been updated for 2005 yet but I am informed the organisers are busy planning...
