Expulsions of Roma in Europe (France, Italy etc)

I was surprised that I couldn't find a thread on the topic - I may have missed it, if so, please do let me know.

The French government have been expelling large numbers of Roma people from France - 11,000 in the past year according to the BBC - and there have been widespread protests (which I previously posted in a thread that actually wasn't connected with the topic) - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11186592

The Italian government, specifically Rome, now, is also demolishing camps - http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/05/rome-ready-demolish-gypsy-camps - and apparently attempting to get permission to expel EU citizens "who do not have work or accommodation and who are claiming benefit".

Any more information?

Germany is doing it's own quiet expulsions as well - including 6000 German born children. Deliberate attempt to scapegoat internal enemies at a time of massive unpopularity - for Sarkozy at least. He's shifted hard right and authoritarian in recent months in order to maintain some sort of rightist bloc. Europe-wide it helps foster the climate where 6 roma can be murdered in cold blood as happened in Slovakia on friday. There's a meeting of the important EU immigration ministers in Paris tmw about this - Frances appeal to be able to expel Eu citizens heading the agenda. Romania and Bulgaria, the countries where the Roma are being expelled to have not been invited along of course.

There was supposed to be demonstrations against this latest round of expulsions across europe this saturday. Not sure how they went, but here's a round up of French stuff with (ranty) criticisms of the complicity of the whole mainstream.

I though us europeans had moved on from all this 'mass expulsion of ethnic groups' thing. :(

Where exactly do people go when they're 'expulsed'?

Fucking sickening in my book.

eta: oh, romania and bulgaria according to the bbc. how the fuck do they get away with that? forgive my ignorance, but are they not part of europe or something?

On a related note, there is a large eviction operation currently underway in Essex at the Hovefields Gypsy site near Dale Farm. Approximately fifty bailiffs from Constant & Co arrived this morning. Constant & Co have also been contracted to clear Dale Farm.

Dale Farm, in Crays Hill, Essex, is the UK’s largest Travellers’ community, consisting of nearly a hundred separate properties, lying well outside the village and made up of extended family plots or yards.

Most are owned by Travellers of Irish heritage, although some Romani families also own yards. The estate is divided in two sections, the front part (about 45 plots) has planning permission; while the back part (52 plots) despite numerous applications and appeals, has been refused planning consent, even though the site was previously a disused scrap yard! 90% of traveller planning applications are initially rejected compared to 20% overall.

Caving in to racial prejudice, Basildon District Council (BDC) has set aside two million bounds to demolish the homes in the back 52 plots. This could happen as early as September. We view the destruction of half this community as ethnic cleansing.

BBC report

Basildon Council leader Tony Ball said: "This action, which is supported by the courts, is the final part of a legal process which has lasted many years.

"I am extremely disappointed that direct action has become necessary.

"The council has done all it can to encourage the travellers to vacate voluntarily. However, Basildon Council has an obligation to protect its greenbelt from unauthorised development."

Basildon Recorder report (17 August)

The Children’s Commissioner is asking questions of Basildon Council and Essex County Council over where youngsters evicted from the Hovefields camp at Wickford, and Dale Farm, Crays Hill, will be schooled and accommodated after the evictions.

About ten families at Hovefields have until the end of the month to leave, or face eviction and about 90 families at Dale Farm have yet to be given a deadline.

You did say sorry though so maybe you shouldn't be deported to somewhere you've never been. You fucking disgrace.

How exactly are 'travellers' trashing parks and threatening your kids?

local park has repeatidly had caravans on it that I can live with even the rubbish isn't too bad piles of building waste and burnt out cars is a bit much.
chucking stones at kids in a playground at lunchtime and at the school windows not really on.
travellers even trashed the offical site.
new age one tend to keep a low profile
van towing a nice caravan crime vandalism and a massive clean up bill fuck em

starting a riot and attacking a police station en masse is not going to make you any friends in the state.
begging is not really a sustainable immigration choice.
france is not expelling the 400000 roma who were born there just 12000 odd from romania/bulgaria who don't have jobs and live in illegal sites.
Not exactly what a goverment is meant to do with a large number of people who don't work are undocumented and survive by begging crime or cash in hand work
