Euro 2008

Somewhat inevitably most of the big matches are happening in Group C, with Czech v Portugal the only other one that jumps out (apart from perhaps Germany v Poland, though I'm really not sure this will be as big a deal as it might once have been).

It's not like that in asia. They all stay up til 5 am each and every night to watch world cups/euros, all involving teams which aren't their country...
and this is what i'm going to have to do. not the best.

i will be supporting spain as they're the ones i have most attachment too.

spain are now fucked, sorry.

That france team looks very impressive probabley short of a centre back(unles squellichi is a centre back i dont know him) but love that midfield.

Personally I always found it much easier if England weren't in it. Pubs not full of twats, no people who've never been to a game telling you who should be playing because they'd just heard it on the telly, no hysteria in the papers...

you forgot no thugs getting pissed up in a european city and treating the locals as if they were there for the sole purpose of serving and getting beaten up by english tossers from croydon.

If thats true then i'd hold it was because the German coppers didn't want to risk provoking any large British groups.

I was in Cologne for England Sweden, and by far the most intimidating crowds (and not in a good football intimidating king of way) were english fans.

Its another interesting media spin story among the many surrounding english football, that english fans have suddenly become all cuddly and that its others perpetrating the violence.

It was the same at 2006, all the German and British papers straining to say how well behaved the english fans were (this was actually a conscious policy of reporting good behaviour to encourage good behaviour) and ignoring that they were still the most aggressive, potentially violent, and badly behaved fans of the tournament, and a quick peruse of youtube will confirma as much.

We as a country have a problem with drunken violence both here and when on holiday abroad, and a few reports in the sun about dangerous polish fans and reports in the times about how friendly we are is not going to change that. No other european country comes close.

France's defence is a real weakness...Boumsoung is a joke, Gallas and Sagnol are pretty average, Thuram's too old and has hardly played for us this season..leaving Evra and Clerc as the decent players. Abidal...he's good but so patchy he becomes a liability at times, same with Squillaci.

If we're doing squads here's Spain's 23 - notbale absences are Raul, Joaquin, Morientes, Reira, Luis Garcia and Raul Tamudo. Although in fairness all of them bar Raul had poor seasons. Bojan was left out due to tiredness.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Andres Palop (Sevilla)

Defenders: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Raul Albiol (Valencia), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Fernando Navarro (Real Mallorca), Alvaro Arbeloa (Liverpool), Juanito (Real Betis)

Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), David Silva (Valencia), Santi Cazorla (Villarreal), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), Ruben de la Red (Getafe), Marcos Senna (Villarreal)

Forwards: David Villa (Valencia), Daniel Guiza (Real Mallorca), Sergio Garcia (Real Zaragoza), Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

I think we easily have the best goalkeeping line up. Defence looks strong and pacey with plenty of cover. The midfield and strikers are ridiculously good. So out in the first round then :rolleyes:

I disagree, Luis Garcia (I assume you mean the espanyol version), riera and tamudo all played pretty well until just after christmas, when they promptly gave up.

and sergio garcia won't be at zaragoza much longer...

Indeed but so did many other players its just Senna, Guiza etc finished stronger. I think Tamudo would have been a decent squad addition the rest i'm not fussed about really.

Is he one of the many players linked to Barca? We are apparently signing everyone!

Yep Im gonna miss JT,Stevie G,Lamps and the rest of them telling all and sundry how England are going to win,how the other teams fear them blah blah blah while wrapped in a St.Georges cross flag;)

Yeah right! Motty will just use the line for spain instead or when we have a qualifying game and havent won it with 10mins to go.

We will never be free of commentation cliches!

Talking of, does anyone know of any of those "I-Spy" or "Cliche Bingo" lists flying around?

I'm gonna keep an informal tally of Premiership and England mentions.

The beeb just made the point that the winner and runner-up of group C play the winner and runner-up of group D, basically meaning that at least one QF should be Spain v Italy/France/Netherlands, which will be pretty tasty.

BBC Gossip Column said:
A record £350m will be bet on this summer's European Championships, despite no Home Nations being involved. (Various)
That''ll probably be people trying to manufacture some investment in the tournament.

Youtube being that bastion of empirical evidence that it is (perhaps second only to Newsround) I'm sure anyone can construct a view of every single nations fans at the tournament based solely on it. I mean there's no need to look at say, arrest figures, what with more fans having been arrested at Germany vs Poland than all of England's 5 matches, you can just have a browse of youtube and a few minutes of grainy mobile phone footage tell the true story. How many people were ever charged with anything? I can't remember the exact figure, but I think it was either 2 or 9. Hooliganism is a problem for many clubs and countries around Europe. The behaviour of England fans pales next to say Roma or Inter. Obviously there is a problem for England or there wouldn't be the need to take people's passports away. But the scenes in 2006 are a world away from 1998 and if the media are reflecting this then this is a good thing.

They will finsih bottom of thier group. Tis a rowdy group, france, italy, holland.

No chance.

dave

Big upsets will happen.

Romania are a very organised team with strong players in all positions.

They will be underestimated by the big teams.

Put your money on them now whilst you can still get a decent price.

It's the euros, a notoriously unpredictable competition, so you might be right. On paper it's a very tough group, but none of those three are vintage France/Italy/NL sides, so you never know.

Italy are old and lack flair, the Dutch have no defence and some very dodgy holding midfield players but brilliant attacking players - Snjeider, Robben, Huntelaar. France have some exciting young prospects and attacking players but are also looking shaky at the back....could be a classic tournament :)

Romania won their group convincingly. The best qualifying record.

The beat Holland on the way.

They have an experienced squad who have been playing together for years, but crucially they are not knackered old veterans.

They also have very good youngsters waiting in the wings as a plan b

France beware...

Yeah, a pretty convincing case. Not sure I'd put money on them winning the tournament but might put a few quid on them getting out of the group, if the odds are good enough.
