I definitely felt a bit of relief in 94, probably a great deal more than I did this time round because at that time even our players were total dogshit on the whole. It was just a bad batch.

it werent that bad!

Seaman D A (Arsenal),
Jones R M (Liverpool), (okay he was shite)
Adams T A (Arsenal) - Captain,
Pallister G A (Manchester United),
Le Saux G P (Blackburn Rovers),
Ince P E C (Manchester United),
Lee R M (Newcastle United),
Barnes J C B (Liverpool),
Le Tissier M P (Southampton),
Wright I E (Arsenal),
Shearer A (Blackburn Rovers),

sheringam and pearce were about as well & platt, les ferdinand beardsley.

Does seem a bit better than I recall but we would've had Brian Deane in the squad, Tony Daley...Geoff Thomas...some bad bad players. Plus, Barnes was shit for England, Le Tiss (who I love) never was a regular and Wright couldn't score for shit back in those England days.

Well in the following tournament after 94, euro 96, was one of our best tournaments ever, so hopefully something similar will happen this time round...(only this time we would preferably win it!)

No it isn't - for a start there may acutally be some decent footy coverage on TV and the papers for a change without resorting to the usual tub thumping xenophobic crap most of them manage when England are in a tournament.

I know spain usually fuck it up, but in world cup 2002 they were victim to one of the most serious cases of daylight robbery ever seen

to be honest, they were robbed by England in Euro '96 too.

makes me laugh they way BBC/ITV have had to change their tv campaigns to still and try and make it enticing without England. Still, it's a bloody shame, as I love the atmosphere around big tournaments.

Oh well, being half-Polish, it's Poland for me. Great qualifiers but rubbish in the actual tournaments :(

He's right it won't feel the same though, in a bad way. Lack of personal interest and all that for most of us.

Jones R M (Liverpool), (okay he was shite)

Oh ye of little footballing knowledge

Quality right back. Had Giggs in his pocket when he made his debut for Liverpool. Career cruelly cut short by injury. His only fault was that he couldn't score, but that's not the main thing you look for in a right back really.

Anyway, Italy to beat Germany in the final. Torres to be top scorer.

Really was a cruel end too. He was a player I kept an eye on, back in the days when you could work your way up the leagues to a top top club.

But he didnt score for liverppol for the 11 seasons he played for them!!!(or whatever it was)

Umm dont really rmemeber him to be quite honest. I remmeber that paul parker hwas better then him though whoich isnt a good thing.

Personally I always found it much easier if England weren't in it. Pubs not full of twats, no people who've never been to a game telling you who should be playing because they'd just heard it on the telly, no hysteria in the papers...

How I miss France '98... Well, coverage was also nice in 2000, until the papers started to make huge headlines about a "UEFA conspiracy" after the Abel Xavier penalty. After that, the press turns xenophobic assholes every time we play a team better than us, the whole "flags in the windows" nationalistic shite, people banging on "ronaldo the best player ever" even without ever seeing him play and every store turned into a shrine for the team.

Fuck this. I think I'll lock myself inside until this ends.

You guys honestly let those twats(the media, stupid fans, etc) get to you to easily.

'Tis true made his debut after a £300000 transfer from crewe

Giggs was the best thing since slice bread at the time (IMO) and some 300k teenager from crewe kept giggsy silent for 90 mins (Rush scored for the first time against Man U IIRC)

I agree (about us in euro 96).

Whatever anyone else says, I'm well excited about the Euros. The only thing stopping me too much is that I'm extremely busy and stressed with personal stuff at the moment...

Nah. That game ended 0-0. Think it was the following season Rush scored.

Jones was officially a Liverpool player for 8 years. I think if he had stayed fit he would have kept Gary Neville out of the England team. He used to get some friendly stick from Liverpool fans every time he had a shot on goal. Great defender though.

my Dad took the whole family to watch Liverpool when he used to work there quite a bit. my Mum - who'd NEVER been interested in football - picked out Jones as their best player and then he got Man Of The Match

I have always said that Mrs Fufkin was an astute judge of footballing talent. Why it seems like only yesterday that she said to me, at a Wolves v Oldham game in 1987 I believe - "Hey Biffo. That Dennis Irwin looks quite useful".

;)

On the other hand I once took a girlfriend to see Oxford at Ninian Park and she thought Steve Anthrobus was a brilliant player.

Mind you, she did like horses.

I hpe it'll be as good as the last Euro tournie England did'nt get to,the 1984 Euro championships, one of the best Ive ever seen:)

Its our year for sure esp if this guy and Torres click.

France announce their 23 man squad for Euro 2008....

So Les Bleus Entrainuer (French Coach) Raymond Domenech has announced his 23 man squad for Euro 2008:-

Goalkeepers: Gregory Coupet (Lyon), Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina), Steve Mandanda (Marseille)

Defenders: Eric Abidal (Barcelona), Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon), Francois Clerc (Lyon), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), William Gallas (Arsenal), Willy Sagnol (Bayern Munich), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona), Sebastien Squillaci (Lyon)

Midfielders: Lassana Diarra (Portsmouth), Claude Makelele (Chelsea), Jeremy Toulalan (Lyon), Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), Samir Nasri (Marseille), Florent Malouda (Chelsea)

Strikers: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea), Karim Benzema (Lyon), Bafetimbi Gomis (St Etienne), Thierry Henry (Barcelona), Sidney Govou (Lyon)

A few suprises there especially that Djibril Cisse, David Trezeguet (even though he's found his goal scoring touch with Juve pays the price for having a difficult relationship with the coach), Mathieu Flamini and Philipe Mexes (Roma) has been left out of the squad. Also Goalkeeper Mickael Landreau (PSG), defenders Julien Escude (Seville) and midfielders Alou Diarra (Bordeaux) and Hatem Ben Arfa (Lyon) were the other five players dropped from the initial squad of 30. I'm quite suprised that Gael Clichy has been left out of the squad, even though Evra (outstanding season with The Corporation) & Abidal - who's had a quite a poor season at Barca got selected.

Bafe Gomis a rumoured target for The Toon Army is selected ahead of Cisse. Some interesting choices from Domenech with regards to not chosing players who are born under the Scorpio star sign!

The quality of the teams on offer makes it look like we may have a great tournament on our hands. I'm going for Germany to win, but will be supporting Spain as i think they may play the best football. (And of course Croatia for knocking out England).
