Euro 2008: who'll survive each group?

Only germany/croatia is at all clearcut. The others are very, very tough to call. I'm going with:

A: Switzerland and Portugal
B. Germany and Croatia
C. Romania and France
D. Sweden and Spain

I'm surprised none of you think switzerland or austria will get out of their group. History dictates that most hosts do quite well in both euros and world cups. I mean ordinarily we'd expect japan or south korea to both go out in the first round. They of course reached the semis in 2002. And then there's the middling team who reached the semis at home in euro 1996...

I think Switzerland have a chance, and wouldn't be all that surprised if they did qualify through the group, but not enough to go on the record with it ;)

Listening to the a podcast yesterday it was said that were this a World Cup, and FIFA were in charge, the hosts would have a much better chance of progressing :hmm:

Yeah but the Euros have a strong tradition of giving dubious decisions to the hosts. Which we benefited from in 1996. And portugal in 2004 with the campbell 'goal' which might have stood if it wasn't against the hosts.

Hmm, fair point, though how dare you suggest our progress in was down to anything but our superb combination of skill, determination and ability

You are of course correct though to point out how we were cheated out of what would undoubtedly have been a triumphant run to tournament champions by a hideous piece of bias, evil like we shall ne'er see again. We should be given Portugal's place in this tournament, and a bye into the following four tournaments.

At least.

A: Portugal and C.Republic
B: Germany and Croatia
C: Italy and France
D: Spain and Russia

Semis = Germany v Croatia and Spain v Italy.

Germany to beat Italy in the final.

I was thinking about that yesterday. Campbell had two goals disallowed in QF stages of major competition, because of a dirty cheating bastard on his own team.

At least Shearer scored goals, Terry's just a cunt innit :D

Well technically one was in the second round, not QF, but I agree ;)

I'm not going to bother with the other groups but I'm predicting group 1 to be

Czech republic and Switzerland to go through !
