I find it pretty fucking scary that the Overton Window has shifted so far right that they're having to try to pass legislation to prevent states from banning gay or interracial marriage. I mean, gay marriage I'd sadly always expect the Right to be going after, but that interracial marriage is in their sights is seriously disturbing.

I get the impression they’re just shoring things up for the future so that another Roe v Wade doesn’t happen, because the equivalent statute is technically equally weak.
There are obv some scary people out there who think along such lines. I find it hard to fathom how you’d even determine what an inter-racial marriage is with any objective criteria.

Yeah, they’d have to break it down somehow. I think the South Africa model, if applied in the USA, would put so many people in the “coloured” category (including loads of people who identify as black, white, Hispanic, First Nations) that it would be unworkable.
They’d likely be taking a small number of mostly white/Asian, largely immigrant people, and severely limiting their marriage options.
When I was a kid my folks considered emigrating to the States during Thatcher’s recession, and my Mum had concerns that things could go backwards over there and me and my sister could be in the frame for discrimination. I figured this was silly at the time and it just came from her growing up mixed race in a small rural/industrial Welsh community while the Civil Rights struggle was in full swing.
Feels pretty crazy to be talking about it nearly 4 decades later.
I just looked at the Apartheid rules and found that (according to Wikipedia, at least), socioeconomic background was one of the criteria, which I never knew (but isn’t so surprising on reflection).

From what I heard this was a response to the Roe v Wade overturning - presumably they were naive enough before then to not believe they'd really do it.
