Yes this is real and it’s more important and dangerous than you realise.
I think it may need a new thread. Or a different thread to this one. I’m serious.
This isn’t going away. It’s a growing faction. And it’s a growing problem. This book is becoming the foundational theology of a new movement with Trump being held up as the new messiah, and he’s going to lean into that. He’s already started giving more onvious support to the QAnon thing. He wants to use these people as his constituency so he can regain power. The election is still two years away. If he builds on his current numbers (and remember that he’s basically a travelling medicine showman) then even if he loses in 2024 his power will be consolidated.
Even if he never holds high office again he is doing below-the-water damage to America.
We can laugh (and why not, it’s risible) but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s not significant.

Agree - Trump and his ilk may do funny things and IME one of the things they are least able to cope with is humour/being made a laughing stock of but overall, they stopped being something to ridicule quite some time ago when they became a real danger instead.

The GOP wanted to feather their own nest and he was a handy cipher for what was already happening. They didn’t have anyone on board who could be a vessel for what was already unfolding in the US, and he was greedy for bigger bigger biggest. The perfect confluence of two rivers, two sets of desires. Pure cynical zombie behaviour on both sides.
We are rehashing stuff here but it’s worth repeating cos it’s still happening and if anyone thinks otherwise they’re not paying attention. The big mistake was that the GOP didn’t realise the wider picture happening elsewhere beyone American shores, ie the larger more widespread shift towards populism and the far right. They thought it/he was an isolated aberrant situation that would be easy to control. Instead they got hold of the tiger’s tail and we are all now reaping the whirlwind. I’m using these old cliched metaphors deliberatey becasue this is an old familiar cliched story.
In some sense, this tragedy can be also be blamed on old fashioned American exceltionalism: yeah, that might happen elsewhere but we are too canny, too switched on, and much more democratic than anyone else ever anywhere! The Democracy will prevail! Americans are smart and good and wholesome people! Although this is not correct and anyone giving it some thought would have seen that, The American Dream is a powerful driving force for your society and often trumps every other consideration. Doing otherwise is to shit on the dream itself.
But it is a dream, an origin myth, a castle built on sand. It’s not real. And the further y’all move from the origin myth, the less beliveable it becomes, and so the more desperately folks try to make it happen. What else is there if the Dream fails?
