Essential Cookbooks

I used to love Marvelous Meals With Mince!

Don't suppose anyone else tried making the pie with potato pastry and mince (obv) with horseradish and dates etc and anchovies on top? I think it was called something like Old English Pie but can't check as I'm away. :D

I have lived with a pescetarian for 12 years and haven't used Marvelous Meals With Mince in all that time. :(

In terms of which book have I used the most, it would have to be this little battered Sainsburys number, written by David Dimbleby's wife Josceline. She and I must have the same taste in sweet things, because all the recipes are great. Such was my confidence in this book, that I once decided to open it at random and cook whatever was on the page for my dinner party (yes, in the days when we held dinner parties). I was a bit disconcerted to see 'Prune Shortcake' but it was delicious.

We still have a Marvellous Meals with Mince somewhere. When desperately broke we made a recipe from it of a tiny amount of mince mixed with flour and water and turned into sort of slightly meaty pancakes.

We had a few little Sainsbury's booklets. One called Sauces, Marinades and Dressings was very useful

We all have reasons to thank Josceline Dimbleby

River Cottage Cook Book / Meat Book have been really good sources of info for me. Also Madhur Jeffrey and a couple of smaller books from the curry club iirc. Also one from Ken Hom on basic chinese cooking technics was brilliant. Had a few of Jamie Oliver's books given to me. Only time I've used then was to help weigh down a game terrine I made. .They all went north with daughter no 2 when she started university.

If you like chocolate and being a bit obsessive, this is great;

The recipes are difficulty rated and have nice clear instructions... also good background explanation stuff. Which is good because this is the more technical end of cooking... covers everything from filled bonbons to tarts, biscuits and mousses.

It is a bit of a Valrohna plugging thing, but doesn’t suffer for it. Also it’s not very healthy.
