England vs USA

Once again England offered nothing from the wings.. no end product from SWP or Lennon. Johnson was good I thought.

Carragher showed why he retired - utter crap.

In fairness the US are a decent side but really the sort England should beat with their squad.

I blame er...

...the ball?

Yeah that's it, its the new ball that's to blame. They said it was hard for goalies to catch it.

Waddyamean its the same ball for both sides?

The problem is that, if you look at the England squad objectively they have three world-class players who can positively affect the course of a match (Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard). Playing with Heskey as they did today - which was pretty Route One at times - usually bypasses two of them, forces one of them (in this case Lampard) to not do what he does at club level and isnt really the best use of Rooney anyway.

Yes, Emile will get the odd flick on but is that really enough to outweigh all the negative points his presence brings?
But just because you can go route 1 doesn't mean you have to all the time, or even most of the time. It's one attack in the armoury. When Johnson had to go off to get cleaned up, England decided to keep the ball for a bit, and looked in total control playing that way. Why not mix it up – stroke it around like Argentina sometimes, aim at Heskey other times – I think they are good enough players to do that.

I'm not too worried about England going forward, tbh. I am worried if Carragher has to come in for King.

What!!! It *has* to be. OK, maybe not the NOTW, but deffo one of the higher brow Sundays.

It can make up what I would have spent if I had stayed out, so it all works out fair.

Or was it not enough. Never donated before. Have I made some etiquette faux par?

I have watched competition games in the past where a team would seem in control, teams like Brazil, France, Germany, Agentina. They seem to take and then keep the ball, their approach towards the opposition goal area seems organised and relentless, sometimes they have attackers who seem to be able to run though defences, and then they made chances and had shots.

England never seem to play like that.

Why is that?

i thought they were like that before green errored.

I didn't, they hardly dominated posession, and the midfield and defence spent half of their time playing the ball backwards.

Oh I forgot Spain can play like that also.

when brazil, argentina (like today) or portugal do that they're 'keeping possession'.

Not a disaster and pretty much what I expected.

England still finding their feet up against a hard working well organised side. I still think we'll win the group quite comfortably.

Heseky was effective - but you just knew he was not going to score when he 1 on1 with howard.

Rooney had some great touches but was being heavily marked.

I think the attacking side will come good and England will start to play with more fluditiy. Capello knows what he is doing and I trust him to get the best out of what hes got.

However he has got a problem with the defence - Ledley King not lasting the game and Greens comedy goalkeeping dont bode well for when we come up against the likes of brazil or spain.

I think the best England can hope for is the semi-finals - where we'll lose to Brazil.

Oh and England have a record of starting quite badly -
Mexico - 1986 - 1-0 defeat to poutugal.
Italia 90 - dire 1-1 draw with Ireland.
Euro 96 - equally dire 1-1 draw with Switzland.

In all cases England went on to play some great football.

Posession seems to me to be good. As long as you do something with it.

If I was an uninterested observer watching the game, would I have thought England were the better side? I am not sure I would.

fucking ITV missed the goal
Only on HD, due to some technical fuck-up. Even ITV don't plan to put adverts on in the 3rd minute of the game. :D

We watched it on normal ITV and the only ads were at half-time. :p

i watched the first few mins when england scored as we had to drive home for two hours, but by all accounts the rest of it was a total disaster? would that be a fair analysis?

Theyve only ever won their opening game in a tournie against Tunisia in '98 and Paraguay in '06 since the WC finals of 1982
