England V Tunisia 19.00 Hrs Monday 18 th June (Volgograd Arena)

Anyway, not a bad game I thought. Refereeing aside. England should have been 3 up by half time. I'd be tempted to start Sterling against Panama to see if he can sharpen up.

Shape looked fine but I think a change of personnel required in some positions if nothing else just to get them involved in the tournament. Panama looked pretty ordinary against Belgium.

I'd like to see the likes of Vardy and involved and a couple of others otherwise the first we see of them is when they are expected to save the game in the last 10 minutes of the knockout stage, having not kicked a ball in the tournament so far.

I'm a fan of var really, the main issue seems to be accuracy Vs a desire to get it sorted quickly and the game resumed. Bungs and conspiracy theories aside, the Kane penalty would definitely/presumably have been given if the var person had had even another 30 seconds to review camera angles one by one. Not saying that all potential var interventions should lead to a 2 minute stoppage in play but, well, maybe the balance between speed and precision isn't right at the moment.
As I said at half time, the ref could have reviewed things in the dressing room, and then at the start of the second half had the penalty taken.

I see nothing wrong with this as a solution. It is flawless.

See! :D

I love the fact they celebrated properly; I guess it still means the same, but felt a bit odd when all that happened was the kick. Also, what happens if the penalty is saved and comes back into open play? Do they just play on until the ball goes dead? How much time does the ref add on?!
My shitty work browser (FFS, I wish they'd sort it out, I'm trying to waste their time here!) won't let me see the video, but it looks like the ref dragged them back during half time when the sprinklers were on - which is bonkers. What you said is better - starting the second half with the penalty.

I imagine there was a big postmortem in the Tunisian changing room at the end of the game over whose job it was to flatten Kane at that final corner. With hindsight two of them should have just thrown him into the crowd, ref would have been cool with it.

Aye, it comes to something when you have to use actual football skills to stop somebody scoring. :(

We joke, but given their tactics throughout the rest of the game, it is weird that both goals came from an unchallenged Kane.

I wasn't aware that Tunisia are the highest ranked African team.

Must be in a state then football in that part of the world, even with a bent ref on their side how boring a side where they.
Not one single shot at goal in 90 minutes.
Pele said a few years ago a country from that part of the world would win the world cup, i think the level has dropped since he said it.

1977 he said it - that an African team would win by 2000.

A good few years ago , he predicted that an African team would win the World Cup by 2000

Thank god they never got any sort of result out of the game.
We dont want any more country's copying their way of playing football.
VAR what a waste of time that is.

seems to be a few bitter welsh on here

That article was as funny as watching them go out to the Portuguese the other year :D
Bitter about what?

And there's no shame in going out to Portugal in the SEMI FINAL, not that it's got anything to do with this thread.

Dont think the Tunisian display and tactics was very different from a lot of the lower ranked teams in the first round tbh which seems to built on dont get beat in the first game.Personally I prefer a straight knock out rather than group stages.

some competitors at the Olympics spend years training then get just a couple of minutes competing the once, then go home. Doesn't seem like such a fair or reasonable way for them to show what they can do. Same applies here even if a single footie game is a bit longer.

I think group stages are great as long as there aren't too many teams. When it goes to 48, it will be flabby, with lots of matches between teams that stand no chance of much progression. Too many teams also makes qualifying even more tedious. 32 is the right number for the WC, 16 for the Euros, imo.

Yep - and the way they are going to cope with 48 teams (groups of 3) has an element of unfairness in it. Something along the lines of teams playing their '2nd game first' having a clear advantage.

Its nice that the expectations of the england team have now lowered to an almost realistic level, I quite enjoyed the match but more importantly I dont feel dirty about it like I have in the last decade or so of tournaments.

That would be the media and so called "experts" ha, not the views of most ordinary people.
was In a market today nobody is getting carried away.
The only hate that i have heard has come from the other home nations mob.
Its only a game
