Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion

Just bought this (hidden amongst the weekly shopping so the missus doesn't see - hooray for supermarkets that stock computer games ;)) - is there much danger in reading the first 8 pages of this thread before I start playing; any spoilers and such?

It's not too bad. Probably best to read the manual thoroughly and then play on your own for a bit. Here's a hint though - don't have any of the following in your makor skills: Athletics, Acrobatics.

Another thing is there's not much point having three meelee skills as your major skills like the warrior does as you'll probably only use one.

If you have a couple of them as minor skills it also means you can grind/train them without levelling so that, when you go up a level, you can get the full +5 bonus. Always have alchemy as a minor skill too - you can level it very fast anyway.

Problems with the game so far:

Arena - could have been far more expansive with different types of matches, more variations, the occasional humanoid challenger when you're grand champion etc.

Realms of oblivion - Too similar, would have been nice to have a variety of different dimensions with different angles to them (ie some like they are now, some deserts, some twisted jungles etc).

Challenge of quests - all the puzzles are a bit too simple so far.

My current character is only level 19 mind you, will post more as I go.

I felt like such a shitheel for a while.......still did it mind you - I had gone to far to turn back from the path of the assassin......but I felt rotten.

:(

Funnily enough, I have redoubled my efforts to do some good following that - back on track again with the main quest, showering beggers with gold coins when they ask and going out of my way to help villagers with their little problems.

haha, I thought I was too soft, but I had exactly the same experiance. I'm spending all my time doing good now, avoiding killing at all costs. This game is shit hot, my only thought is that I feel really alone when wondering about the lands, but when you do finally get someone *tagging along* they end up getting in the way during battles...

Really?

I found these helped my levelling and marksman etc skills.......got no problem with these!

I think his point is that those skills will level up anyway because you'll be running and jumping all over the shop for long periods.

Is there any way to retrieve a history of those throwaway 'Rumors' comments by NPCs - the ones that are obviously hints about where to go to get quests, but are too easy to forget if you're on your way somewhere else?

Just ask them again?

Nah, these are the 'overheard' things you sometimes get snatches of. If you don't get close enough when they're playing, then your journal doesn't pick up the subject (and it's not available in conversation menus) - the only hope is to hang around in towns and wait :(

gawd this reminds me of morrowind, I used to use a shorthand notepad to keep scribblings down on, twas a nightmare!

Thankfully, the journal in Oblivion is much better than the morrowind one - it at least categorises by quest, letting you making any one your 'active' quest.

I've just bought III for the xbox on the strength of this thread. :)

You will either adore its free-form open-ended nature or feel completely overwhelmed and aimless!

Sadly I was the latter - I find the slightly more focussed nature of Oblivion more suited to my game-playing!

I am getting a new Mactel Imac soon and was wondering if the hardware would produce good results on Oblivion?

Its got a 1gb of Ram, 2.0Ghz Dual Core Intel processor and a Radeon x1600 video card with 256mg of Ram.

Of course it will be running in Boot camp, not OSX.

Anybody had any experiences with this?

The CPU is more than enough, the RAM is alright (i've never seen oblivion peak over 1GB) the graphics card will be the weakpoint. You'll be able to play, but don't expect to be able to use any of the fancy graphics settings.

Beta Patch has been released.

Hopefully, this will help with my crashing every half hour problem.

Bear in mind I'm on an old 9800 pro and the game looks pretty good already. You'll be fine :)

Not personally, but I read somewhere recently of someone running Half Life 2 and some other top-end game on a Mactel with good results.

<goes off to find link>

Here it is - HL2 and Far-Cry, both playing fine. :)

I'm on 256MB 9600XT and it can run all the special features barring HDR.

You'll both be on SM 2.0 i think, which uses a cruder and less GPU intensive shader model system.

Note: The bastard son of the ex emperor is obviously voiced by Sean Bean:

From IMDB:

Patrick Stewart: Emperor Uriel Septim VII (voice)
Sean Bean:Martin Septim (voice)
Terence Stamp: Mankar Camaron (voice)
Lynda Carter: Nord Females, Orc Females (voice)

rest of cast listed alphabetically:

Jonathan Bryce: Argonian Males (voice)
Ralph Cosham: Breton Males (voice)
Catherine Flye: (voice)
Gayle Jessup: (voice)
Wes Johnson: Lucien Lachance, Imperial Males, Dremora, Arena Announcer (voice)
Michael Mack: Redguard Males (voice)
Elisabeth Noone: Argonian Females (voice)
Craig Sechler: Dark Elf Males (voice)

The Dark Elves sounded sooo much better in Morrowind...........

"Greetings outlander" in a rough and stoney voice ;)

I keep being very bad at the moment, just bought a rage spell.....I can't stop the urge to cast it on the poor citizens. they just go bananas and end up getting killed by the guards:oops: :D
