Egypt anti-government protests grow

Dylans - I think your scenario of someone like El baradi being smoothed into positon with US bakcing is very likely; but if/when mubarak goes the govenrment will have to grant free elctions, press and political freedoms, and release of political prisoners at the least - which would be a fantastic victory for the frankly courageous egyptian people and will put the shits up all the other tyrants in the region.

Yes there will be gains but the same regime faces will remain. There will still be no jobs. There will still be poverty. There will be no real change of regime and we will all be expected to celebrate this masquerade as a victory when the real victory, the sweeping away of the whole stinking regime, is being stolen from those who fought and bled and deserve better

Good. Better than protecting govt buildings and they'll still want tourist dollars after the revolution.

Incidentally I saw comments on Twitter earlier saying protestors had formed a human chain round the museum to prevent looting.

Most of the King Tut artifacts have been touring the US. I think it's currently in Denver and slated for NYC in April.

That Manual For Revolution On The Streets thing is absolutely fantastic. So well put together and clear. Big thumbs up to whoever put it together and I hope it circulated widely.

Egypt academic on BBC News: "Very unlikely Mubarak will remain" in power. Hinges on how military manages transition. Coup a possibility.

The US is dumping Mubarak.

If this is true. Mubarak is finished.

I suspect western govts will push for this. Blair's monologue was full of hints such as 'managing change' which revealed their position. Of course they're going to want to influence installing a friendly face there rather than leave it to the will of the people. Ordinary Egyptians may very well be better off, but they'll still be governed by a regime that serves US - and by extension, Isreali - interests over and above their own.

Yes. It's the sort of thing that'd get dragged down by committee in the UK :D
