Egypt anti-government protests grow

Its becoming clear now.
Egyptian military's chief of staff, Lt General Sami Enan, is going home early from DC, having been in meetings at the US defence department.

I am betting the US has told him to dump Mubarak.

Robert Gibbs, White House press secretary -

"The legitimate grievances that have festered for quite some time in Egypt have to be addressed by the Egyptian government immediately," says Gibbs.

Pretty clear message there.

Sorry, reported by Al Jaz.

Disturbing if they're sending in the military to shut down Al Jazeera, not very surprising mind.

I'm still pretty worried about all of this, I fear the protestors may have been lulled into a false sense of security, there were images of folk celebrating in the street, maybe they've been told that Mubrak has been toppled by the army.

I hope I'm wrong.

I think its been hours now since the presidential guard unit went to the tv station, decent near-realtime updates on the situation are hard to come by. Have some live pics from Cairo again recently but they dont show anything useful.

Mubarak is finished. Game over. Expect news of him leaving soon

I am liking this comment on Twitter:-

British Prime Minister is calling for reforms in #Egypt. Why didn't your government call for that before? Say.. in past 30 years? #jan25

Why not indeed?

OK Im going to do my own detective work here.

Seen the couple of seconds of footage on Al Jazeeras current loop that shows military and protesters not getting on outside a building?

Found a picture of the Nile TV building, it appears to match the footage, in that its lower sections are round.

Any possibility he might try and put up a fight?

Must have a few units who are loyal to him. Is he arrogant/deluded enought - or will the lure of The Idi Amin Hotel in Suadi prove too strong?

US have given his marching orders...he'd be an idiot to make a stand.

If he was very arrogant/deluded wouldn't he have been on telly by now thinking his authority would resolve things?

The army have just been told they are going to lose 1.5 billion dollars a year unless Mubarak leaves.

Obviously we will be reviewing our assistance posture based on the outcome of events, now and in the coming days," intones Gibbs.

Game over.

Dylans - I think your scenario of someone like El baradi being smoothed into positon with US bakcing is very likely; but if/when mubarak goes the govenrment will have to grant free elctions, press and political freedoms, and release of political prisoners at the least - which would be a fantastic victory for the frankly courageous egyptian people and will put the shits up all the other tyrants in the region.
