Egypt anti-government protests grow

From the guardian live feed...

5.05pm:CloseLink to this update: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2011/jan/28/egypt-protests-live-updates#block-94 The Associated Press reports on the scene in Cairo's central plaza:

An Associated Press reporter saw the protesters cheering the police who joined them and hoisting them on their shoulders in one of the many dramatic and chaotic scenes across Egypt on Friday. After chasing the police, thousands of protesters were able to flood into the huge Tahrir Square downtown after being kept out most of the day by a very heavy police presence. Few police could be seen around the square after the confrontation.

Coppers turning :D`

Argh what a scary time it is right now, having heard very nasty gun sounds but with the commentary and pictures lagging well behind these events. I hope the army have not been shooting people in large numbers while Al Jazeera are running out of date info about 'army gave thumbs up to protesters'.

There's either many dead on the streets, or live fire has been fired into the air. I'd go for the latter.

Undoubtedly good if the military are switching but it's hardly ideal to have them dictating what happens next. Hmh.

Eyewitness from town 120km south of Cairo.

Group demonstration, no political parties, big youth element.

I'm quite liking all these slightly bemused 'opposition' politicos confessing that it really isn't much to do with them. Hope that aspect lasts.

And if it's the military on the ground switching rather than the generals switching? Does it make a difference?

Sky now reporting that thousands of protestors are trying to storm the (pro Govt)TV HQ

An Al Jazeera correspondent also mentioned that this was the direction the gunfire sounds Ive been wibbling about for at least half an hour were coming from.

As you say, depends who's switching, if it's the Generals then it makes a big difference, actual troops and it might not. No where near enough info to say either way though really.

It was known earlier today that protesters had acquired police fire arms. Maybe it was protester gun fire?

Well we are severely limited with info, only getting a picture of what is going on in the immediate vicinity of one building in Cairo.

The audio is subject to misinterpretation, and as Al Jazeera have now returned to the reporter in the area I have calmed myself with the increased probability that some of what we are hearing now and heard earlier is actually wind blowing into a mic.

Mubarak has to go now surely? The army must recognise that dumping him is the only way to prevent bloodshed?

That is a nice touch Aljazeera showing a split screen with their own camera on the left, and Egyptian TV on the right with a static image of the Opera House lit up and with traffic moving along.

Lots of live Cairo pictures of multiple army miltary vehicles driving down a road and a few protesters waving at them, and blokes on armoured carriers waving back. heading for ministry of foreign affairs & info apparently.

Al Jaz - also shows live pics of demonstrators cheering military vehicles moving past. Alexandria - same situation reported but traffic still moving so not a crackdown on movement in that city.

I'm a little bit more hopeful hearing this...

(ha - elbows beat me... :)
