Dune - dir. Denis Villeneuve

Walken. Been lacking Walken recently. And now he's in Dune. Hopes and trepidation levels increased.

This is a good trailer.
Book wankers will recognise some scenes!
(and others might want to avoid watching cos there's some awesome shots that you might want to see for the first time at the cinema)

apparently Villeneuve has already stareted working on a script for Messiah...

Book wanker but will also avoid watching this. :)

My partner who does not read Sci Fi at all read the book after watching the first film.

I just rewatched a few minutes of the first one to see if it really was as slow and ponderous as I remembered it. It was. When both films are out someone needs to do a fan edit where they cut it into one film and just get rid of all those long shots and atmosphere shots that Villeneuve thinks are deep and meaningful but are in fact just boring.

Christ, it's 2hr 46m long. Personally I thought the first one was atmospheric and moody, but anyone who doesn't share that view really should wait for that fan edit :D

The first one got 5 out of 10 from me. I thought it was dull, dull, dull, and I hated the dialogue. Nearly fell asleep at one point.

It was a bit slow but I loved it. The sound design was excellent. Mind you I really wanted it to finish That was predicting where it would, based on the book, about 30 minutes from the end because I really needed a piss. My fault for taking drink in I suppose.

Yeah, I have to pick a day when I’m off. I meant to see Napoleon last week but couldn’t facing a near three hour film after being sat down for eight hours working.

Yep got mine too. Back to L.Sq IMAX, centre seats, centre row. £25 each O_O
Worth every penny I expect. Of course all the pre-release social media is frothy hype but there are good signs that Denis has leaned hard into the "politico-religious figureheads are super bad" theme and it's not a happy ending. Can't wait.

Saw the first one tonight after hearing rave reviews for part 2. Can understand why some people didnt like it but I thought it was great. Dont know the books at all and my only memory of the David Lynch one is Sting in some wierd space pants. Great, epic, immersive film which looked awesome. Quite arthouse with its sparse exposition and cinematography. Somebody upthread said they thought the CGI was really well done - managing to look great with out crowding everything out - so it actually looked both real and spectacular. It treated the story with seriousness rather than going hollywood. And - depsite its mytical messiah themes - didnt come accrpss as load of pseudo spiritual mumbo jumbo - but a created a convincing, complicated world with its own peoples and cultures. Its thematic similarities with Avatar show up just what a pile of flimsy cartoon wank that was. Would have loved to seen it on a big screen but will make up for that for part 2.
Anyone know how many films are planned btw?

I’ve booked for the local fleapit on Friday. I watched part 1 at home around 6 months ago but don’t recall a great deal. They’re showing part 1 somewhere nearby on Thursday.

A series about the Bene Gesserit done well would be great. But it'll be like all the other Dune series - rubbish.

I watched the first one on the plane to LA. Didn't really understand wtf was going on. Some sort of future world set in a desert with giant sand worms from what I remember. It wasn't for me.

Three. Part one and two cover the original Dune novel. Part three would cover Dune Messiah, which really hammers home the "charismatic politico-religious leaders are bad shit" message and neatly wraps up Paul's story. They've already started work on the script, but Villeneuve has said he'd prefer to do something else first, as these films are exhasuting to make. The studio are sure to let him make it given the reception part two is getting.

I’m still hanging on him doing Rendezvous With Rama 🙏

ETA that should be a piece of piss and a nice relaxing break for him 🤔
