Donald Trump - news and discussion

I wondered about that. Is it like Patreon, where you pay to view content? Yeah, I understand journalism needs to be paid for, but I’m paying to access the internet in the first place, I’m paying for every TV streaming service. There comes a point in the subscription model where I duck out.

In the olden days of dead tree media, I bought one newspaper and the occasional magazine. I didn’t buy them all plus tip the journalists individually. And advertising was always a big revenue stream anyway. If I’m going to have to pay for every blog, I’m not going to bother. Especially with the extreme variability of quality.

It’s a problem.

IIRC Substack are also quite happy to host Nazi's so probably best avoided in general.
just a blogging platform
some good stuff
some horrendout stuff
the anti vaxxers conspiracists are making a mint out of it as far as I can tell...

I think when Trump said he wouldn't implement Project 2025 he must have meant Project 2025 wasn't extreme enough - his latest executive order is to build a Guantanamo Bay internment camp for 30,000 migrants

No self respecting fascist is going to run his regime without concentration camps.
Arbeit macht frei.
He can set up a few more in Greenland when his Lebensraum policies come to fruition.

Wow. I'd forgotten about Trump being cancelled by Facebook. No wonder Zuckerberg now wants to kiss Trump's ass. He probably figures out this settlement is getting off lightly. Alternatively, Trump could probably (try to) shut Meta/Facebook/Instagram down. His ego is fragile enough and he's vindictive enough.

It definitely won’t come to that. California will not be allowed to just walk away. It isn’t capable of seceding.
For the second time: Hence: "That said, I don't think it will come to that."

Maybe I should've done that male thing of asserting an opinion as fact, rather than doing the female thing of expressing it as thoughtful opinion?

"That said, I don't think it will it won't come to that."

There. Fixed that for you. Happy now? Sheesh.

Exactly, anyone even entertaining the idea is delusional. California's prosperity is completely dependent on access to natural resources (particularly water) that come from the rest of the US
When has the fact that an idea is delusional ever got in the way of someone proposing it? JFC, when I mentioned it, I was merely reflecting on the last time California got into a war of words with the trump admin. I did not realise that it had become a "thing" again and, somewhat concerningly, so early in the new admin as well...

I'd forgotten about that, too!!!!

I can't see him shutting down fb and ig. Why would he bother? He got money, and he loves getting other peoples money.

Yeah, exactly, he's not going to shut them down, but he's going to exact a price from Zuckerberg for not doing so.

I'm amazed Zuckerberg's wife hasn't filed for divorce yet. I mean, she's a medical doctor, so highly educated, a professional working woman.

And yet you've got Zuckerberg going on about the workforce has been 'culturally neutered' and needs more 'masculine energy'. He's properly gone down the red pill rabbit-hole.

I would say it's just Zuckerberg making a calculated commercial decision, to save his company, except TheFacebook was originally designed as a social network for Harvard students, and specifically involved rating the attractiveness or otherwise of female students. So Zuckerberg's always been a cunt.

I’d like to see a poll of Trumps first week so far while Americans are still free to give their views. It would be interesting to see how many regret voting for him.

Approval rate has declined from 47% to 45%, so only slight dent.

However, disapproval rate has increased from 39% to 46%. This tells us that people who have been giving him the benefit of the doubt are starting to make their minds up.

Yes it was extremely mean and unnecessary. It seems you are still here however breadandcircuse has been thread banned. How did that happen?
It's a common experience for newcomers here, the old guard give em shit and when they fight back they get accused of derailing a thread then one of the wankers reports it to Mr Ed and there you go....its the urban way

Liberal literal eugenics shit. Don’t.

I don't want to reopen Stupidgate again but I don't think criticising Trump voters or expressing hope they experience negative consequences from his policies should be taken as an attack on working-class Americans or whatever - Harris had a slight edge among the poorest and richest Americans, with others leaning toward Trump, but the margins weren't massive in any income bracket, according to this poll

ETA - I see the "leopards eating faces" thing not as a reference to people who didn't understand what they were voting for but to people who fully knew that their vote could lead to bad things happening to other people but didn't expect it to happen to them, I think a Trump-supporting business owner going broke because some of his workers have been deported and others are afraid to show up might be a better example of that than a former autoworker in the Rust Belt losing health coverage

MOD MODE

It's also the urban way to issue warnings to posters who have continued to disrupt threads with off topic content after being clearly warned many, many times. I can forgive new posters who may still be adjusting to how these boards work, but there's no excuse for you to be continuing this sniping.

If you want to complain about the 'urban way' (whatever that is), take it to the feedback forum. Continue moaning here and you will be warned.

I didn't realise that Amazon had joined the queue of Trump's boot-lickers and ended diversity, equity and inclusion programs as soon as the Orange fuckwit was elected.

Jeff Bezos has donated to Trump and dined with him at Mar-a-Lag. He sat at his inauguration in the row behind Trump's family, but in front of Trump's cabinet. He was sat alongside Musk, Zuckerberg and the google CEO. The big corporations are all onboard with the Trump regime this time round.

I made a glancing reference to it earlier.

And his constituency will feel just peachy about the pesky Palestinians not getting free condoms (the resulting children will die of starvation, the resulting STDs will go untreated).

As with so much else he's said (it was used as part of the defence for the defunding attack) MAGA will repeat it as fact to anyone criticising him. The tactic worked during the election, it'll still work during his tenure. Even if his critics don't believe his lies, MAGA is deeply invested in continuing to do so.

I’m not making a point about class percentages, but if margins aren’t massive then that’s still a large number of working class voters who “deserve” their faces to be eaten by leopards. 46% of the lowest income bracket.

If the leopards eating faces thing was only being applied to such business owners then I’d be more relaxed about it. But it isn’t. It’s used - as it always is - as a sneery way of liberals saying other folk should vote the way they do.

Is it OK for me to say it about folk who voted Labour? I won’t, but you know, Starmer is a shitesquirrel.

Apologists for bourgeois democracy claim that each voter is fully informed and knows for what they are voting, and that there is actually a meaningful difference between most bourgeois politicians. We could just as easily say that those who voted for Harris endorsed crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

A presidential library eh? :hmm:

It's a standard thing. It's all the paperwork and documents generated by the president while they're in office, so a historical archive.

Some presidents will keep it as that while others use it as an opportunity to build some kind of educational or cultural asset they can donate to the nation. How it's paid for varies.

Trump already has one, cos he was president once before. He ain't gonna sit back and not use the Presidential Library tradition as an opportunity to go bigger bolder brasher, especially if he can use it as a fulcrum point for further extortion.

What it might actually be like is moot right now. Also, the little matter of accuracy and omissions probably needs to be addressed.

Indeed we could.

And lest anyone think otherwise, I’m not saying Harris and Trump are “just the same”.

Voter regret is being reported on. Immigrants who have discovered they're not safe from deportation in the first instance, but others too.

Some really horrible responses to that too, MAGA diehards pointing and laughing and saying "Ha! He used you! Suckah! Good riddance, none of us want you" so I'm wondering how they'll feel when his scything policies hit them.

In terms of intelligence, I wonder if they were stupid to vote for him, and suddenly lose their stupidity when they change their mind.

Of course it's not about intelligence. It's so many other complex interfacing factors.

Dis-education is such a fantastically useful tool for keeping people - especially the working class - on their knees that it's become symbiotically embedded in the capitalist mschine, to the point where it's hard to see where the tool ends and the person begins.

People who point and shout "Stupid dumb people, it's all their fault!" are also on the receiving end of this particular weapon.

So handy for keeping the citizenry divided.

Native Americans are being detained by ICE

I’ll just say that again.

People who are descended from the people who lived on American soil before any other person set foot there, are being targeted as illegal immigrants by white people who are descended from early-doors immigrants.

It’s not really about immigration, it’s about white supremacy.

So I’ve been thinking….

One of the potential uses for the YT channels I look at could be as a resource to help people think through why Trump is bad.

I can imagine myself being in a conversation with one of my South Carolina relatives and wanting to point them towards a resource, one that’s fairly easy to access and consume. Allowing that they may refuse to check out the LW media, let’s assume they might.

Here are two videos that cover the same turf. One from the NY Times and the other from David Packman (I forgot to mention him earlier). My cousin would never ever ever not in a billion years look at the NYT video, but he might, might, check out the David Packman video.

I’ve also been thinking a bit more about what comes next, where this is leading., and what can actually be done about it. Groping around, but it’s my main concern now.

Saying “well here’s hoping it won’t get worse, could be better” is wrong and dangerous.

Some in the US are posting up basic advice about how to push back, refuse to go under, how to stay safe. It’s scrambling for safety. Complacency ahead of the election and blind trust in the demographic process has got us to the threshold of fascism, in the most powerful nation on earth.

What’s to be done? How?

What’s to be done? How?

When Trump takes the oath and says he solemnly swears to execute the office of the President of the United Staes, I would say that’s his interpretation of that office and how he sees it should be done. It’s for his own benefit and not the US.
