Donald Trump - news and discussion

I don't think Trump mentioned his plan to resume sending 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, or his proposal to "clean out" Gaza and send its residents elsewhere, while he was reaching out to Arab American voters

“I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

“You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say: ‘You know, it’s over.’”

Wasn't Kuschner talking about real estate there and building hotels etc recently? So fucking disgusting. Making money from such tragedy. I heard the orange fucker saying about the weather and the sea front location earlier. Fucking vultures.

Yup:

Idaho lawmakers want Supreme Court to overturn same sex marriage decision.

Trump has disbanded The Federal School Safety Clearinghouse External Advisory Board,
that works to prevent school shootings. How much more of a cunt does he have to be
before he loses his supporters, or are they so fucking hateful, or stupid, that he'll not lose them?
Trump probably agrees with the NRA's answer to school shootings which is to arm the teachers so that they can shoot first.

How is he going to take Greenland if Denmark doesn't agree? By sending in the troops - probably not even that many - and taking it, that's how!

What consequences are there for him of becoming a 'rogue country '?

You are still living in a world where the US abides by a set of norms. That appears to be over.
It never has. Always fought against the ICC, refuses allied country’s jurisdictions when US troops have gone rogue there, doesn’t give a fuck about what the UN does or says on wars, climate change, Israeli aggression etc. Invaded other countries and interfered in democratic processes. It’s been a rogue state for decades, just ‘one of ours’.

Agreed. But abiding by norms when it came to dealing with the 'western' world in the main.

There is precedent. 35 years ago the US invaded illegally.

Aye, they had an excuse in so far as "their man" Noriega had turned "baddie" on them. Now it's just a matter of "hmm... that nice canal, we want it, we deserve it, we'll take it". See also the idea of marching into Poland... er... I mean Greenland: "hmm... that nice oil and other rare minerals, etc..."

There's a difference between arresting Noriega and taking over the canal. Sinking a few container boats along the length of the latter would make it a phyrric US victory.

It was not simply "arresting Noriega". It was overthrowing the government of Panama contrary to international law, and killing hundreds of Panamanian troops, and hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians.

That's what American governments with varying degrees of success do all over the World. We all know that. My point was that like the Suez Canal the Panama Canal is vulnerable to sabotage and a blocked Canal would have a very negative impact upon the US economy.

Apparently the UK has first refusal on any fire sale of Greenland lol, can we Gazump Trump? :p

Tom Høyem, Denmark’s representative to Greenland between 1982 and 1987, also said that if Denmark were to sell Greenland, it would have to give the UK first refusal under the 1917 agreement.

The British government at that time demanded it should have the first right to buy Greenland, because of the island’s proximity to Canada, then a British dominion.

Donald Trump says residents of Greenland want to be part of US

Maybe we could all have a whip round.

Having now got around to listening to all of this podcast, the middle section has a really interesting (and depressing) discussion of the actual mechanisms Trump's using to centralise and consolidate power. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, the relevant section lasts from about 32-53 minutes in.

Short version is that for one thing, there's a mechanism that allows budget bills to be passed without going through the usual congressional scrutiny, so they're likely to submit something that they call a budget bill that packs as much of their agenda in as possible. Also points to Russell Vought as maybe the most important Trump appointee - here's a bit of background on him:

WASHINGTON — Colombia on Sunday turned away two U.S. military aircraft that were flying to the South American country with migrants being deported, a U.S. official told Reuters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the aircraft had left California with about 80 migrants on each one when Colombia pulled their clearances.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said earlier on Sunday in a post on social media platform X that he would not allow the United States to fly migrants to Colombia in military aircraft.

so quite a specific refusal:
pay commercial airline to return them (with all the added costs this entails)
