Supposedly 'one of the most happening cities in France'. No idea what though.

A swift google shows that it's only exciting if you are from Canada or somewhere 'It's so close to Germany, squee!', or in to very dull tourist pursuits like church tours.

It's not just the architecture and design, but the social history as well. They tend to have been the focal point of civic life for hundreds of years and the traces that leaves are interesting and, yes, exciting.

When I was there some crazy guy scaled the cathedral to the cross at the tip of the spire. Bare hands. No ropes, or harness. He then sort of flip-flopped all the way down where he was arrested. That was the only exciting thing I saw.

The light show on the river is OK.

Bars and nightlife are very limited. It's not a big city. Much more about gentle daytime strolls - it is a beautiful city.

There are a few bars with an 'alternative' feel to them, but generally it is all about trendy cuisine, or poncey French cultural elitism. Pretty much dead by midnight on Saturday.

Suited me down to the ground. I stayed for a couple of weeks

I drank a lot of good beer and wine and ate a lot of fine cheese, which makes it a pretty good city in my book.

there was a big demo about the right to hold illegal raves some years back. followed up by the obligatory rave just over the border in an old air force base iirc.
