In search of a retirement haven - does a multicultural paradise exist on Earth?

Thailand now offers a retirement visa. Owning property isn't a good idea but it'd be a great country to grow old in.
Thailand is great, and I don't want to sound too picky, but it's a little too humid for my oily skin )))

tenerife you can still get a full english breakfast, english papers if thats your thing and cheap return flights to blighty to come back and visit.

Well, my notion of multiculturalism includes, apart from wide acceptance and tolerance towards the different, such things as cost of living and beautiful lagoons ) I don't think I can afford to move to Amsterdam, nor would I probably want to.. I'd like to be near the beach, not the stinking canals )

Try Hawaii. We found that quite multicultural. Obviously there's tourist spots too but there's a good few islands to chose from.

I've been checking out different locations in the South of India for almost five years. India is such an incredible place, but you must be extremely healthy and adaptable to survive the extremities. Besides, It's been getting increasingly expensive for what you get for money.

Well, how about Tenerife? It seems to be both almost perfect climatically and retiree friendly, particularly in terms of taxes and costs of living..

Depends what part of Tenerife you find yourself at. If it's in the South, you'll find yourself surrounded by white Northerners. So, not quite so multicultural. Try the north; a bit cooler but greener and not so touristy.

What's the best place to go for Tenerife property, do you think? I should really check it out before it's too late ) It's my experience, however, that some brokers charge too much to both the seller and the buyer..

I shouldn't tell you this but try the island next door. La Gomera.

Kazakhstan is well-known as being a place where a lot of different religions have rubbed along fairly peaceably for a long time. It's also massive, so offers a choice of climates.

I was in Sydney recently, that's pretty multicultural. Loads of Asians and Europeans living there along with the white Australians. Sadly not many indigenous folk compared to other cities, or afro-carribean people but you can't have everything. I'm guessing Melbourne would be similar with a colder climate.

This thread brings to mind my idea of retirement hell.
An apartment in Florida on the edge of a golf course.

Or those "Sandals" holidays - somewhere generically tropical ...

Where to retire to; depends on beliefs, ethics Etc. San Diego has a superb climate but, like at least one place already mentioned, rather full of Americans.
Sth of France for climate, tolerence, food, drink Etc. Also, Costa Rica sounds a cool place.

Why do people want to retire to somewhere else so much? It would be the last thing I'd want to do. Uproot everything and fuck off to somewhere where you know no-one and if you get ill you're on your own. No thanks, I'll stay with in the community where my roots are embedded.

I've never been embedded in my community.
I'm already on my own.
If I wasn't still working and needing to report there, I would be discovered as a stain on the carpet were I to snuff it.

The same would happen elsewhere though. You'd be even more isolated because of cultural and language barriers.

And the sea and growing my own veggies ...
I almost wish Brittany had some slightly more dangerous wildlife ...

the sea is a draw actually. sitting on a bench with a flask of tea, tartan blanket on your knees, crossword compendium in your hands, listening to the shingle singing. that would be nice, but not in fucking Tenerife.

El Medano in Tenerife is far far away from the stereotype, for example. Also Mt Tiede National Park. Fucking beautiful. Weed smoking clubs if that's your thing. Tenerife is not all egg and chips tourism. And the climate is totally benign.

I don't want much culture to retire to, multi, arty, horti, any. Just me grey-haired missus, a guitar, a big shaggy dog and a proper fire and rain 8 months of the year.
