I must admit Eraserhead is a confused memory to me (most of late 70s early 80s are tbh), I'll have to re - watch it
But Twin peaks was just brilliant in its surrealness, Blue velvet weirded me out a bit
Certainly David Lynch was a bit of a genius amongst a heap of successful but banal film makers of the time

I remember as a kid being in floods of tears watching The Elephant Man.

Same, the injustice and the compassion destroyed me. I've never managed to watch it again, in fact

Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive were superb. Wild at Heart is a guilty pleasure however The Straight Story is so underrated, perhaps because it is a straight story with no twists or the unexpected. Just one about the better side of humans and their courage.

The Straight Story is absolute magic.

I even love Dune. And I'm not sorry about it Crazy, visionary, melodramatic madness. A huge part of my teenage years.

Sad news. One of the few directors whose work was genuinely thought provoking. RIP David.

What a champion of all that is interesting, different and outsider. Always worth paying attention to, even if his work isn’t always successful. I loved Eraserhead for years. It spoke to me. About what I’m not sure I could tell you, but I felt it somehow informed my ethics. But now I’d have to put Straight Story among my favourite ever films.

He’ll be missed.

There definitely seems to be a conservative thread in some of his films. There are some bits in Wild at Heart that look pretty homophobic (from memory).
