David Lynch RIP

Didn't think he was gonna be long for this world.

A lot of his stuff I can take or leave but the new Twin Peaks series was magnificent.

Really sad about this. I’d literally just started rewatching Twin Peaks.
He looms large in my life as a champion of all things weird. He’s probably the only artist I’ve been a ‘fan’ of outside music (and Twin Peaks is the first OST I ever bought on vinyl).
Farewell maestro :(

First series of twin peaks was superb

Remember watching a torrent which had the Swedish subtitles around 2002. Genuinely weird and compelling. Might have even heard about it from here in my early days

“She’s dead, wrapped in plastic”

Didn’t like the second series or get the third one at all. I should watch more of his films

Quite liked some of his stuff (Wild at Heart, Eraserhead, etc) but hated Twin Peaks and the pretentious fandom it spawned. An original nevertheless 😕

Shame, some of his work I love

Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet are the best to start with. I was not that keen on Eraserhead. I did like Inland Empire but only seen it once some time ago so I do not know if it stands up to repeat viewing.

Blank Check* literally just finished their Lynch run a couple of weeks ago.

I've never really 'got' Lynch, even with the understanding that's not necessarily the point, but he's clearly very important to a whole lot of people, as well as just cinema in general.

So, he did a good lot with the time he got, can't ask much more than that.

Very sad.

You can't argue with this + Twin Peaks. I must have seen Blue Velvet/Wild at Heart half a dozen times; mainly late night in some student flat somewhere in the north west.

The wildfires finally did for him?

In an August 2024 interview with Sight and Sound, Lynch said he was suffering from emphysema due to years of smoking, and had become housebound due to health risks. He said this would likely preclude any further directorial projects.[180][181]

In November 2024, Lynch told People that he quit smoking in 2022, two years after he was diagnosed with emphysema, and that he had started smoking when he was 8. He said he was now reliant on supplemental oxygen for most daily activities. "I can hardly walk across a room", he said.
[182]

In January 2025, Lynch evacuated his Los Angeles home due to the Southern California wildfires; Deadline Hollywoodreported that these events preceded a terminal decline in his health, and on January 16, 2025, Lynch's family announced that he had died at the age of 78.[183]

That and all the cigarettes. But aye, global warming finished him off

Thank you. I rewatched Blue Velvet last year and enjoyed it. Mulholland Drive I watched once on a computer monitor but it could do with a proper rewatch

i think he's the only director I've seen every film from - each one a masterpiece of sorts
Id go as far as saying that the strongest filmography of any director - even Inland Empire - If you like that sort of thing!
