Customer not happy with VAT portion of my invoice.. advice needed!

I think it boils down to what was agreed on the original quote.
Is your mate (the one who provided the original quote) VAT registered?
Did he say +VAT on his original quote?
That's really all that matters.

I remember the massive 1979 increase was effective the Monday following the budget speech. The point is that it’s a sum decided on by the government over which the person preparing the quotation and subsequent invoice has no control. If a company quotes £6k all inclusive and the VAT rate goes up, they’d be relying on the goodwill of the customer to stump up any extra.
It's simply a case of adding +VAT @ 20% (as opposed to just +VAT) to the invoice, then if the rate changes, you're covered.

Also, they can't just choose not to pay VAT.

As per my post up there ^^^, the solicitor pointed out you have to quote the price is subject to VAT, which TBF seems reasonable & simple enough.

Sticking 20% on without warning, to a business that can't claim it back, and didn't expect it, is not reasonable at the end of day.

And, that's how a District Judge will decide the outcome, if it goes to the County Court.
