On other railway news, I passed my old house this morning. A bank of 10 workers cottages by the old Croydon canal.
Probably built for lock workers on the canal (or builders?).
Old maps show that there was nothing but fields around and this small bank of ten houses, but it's now a bit of an oddity, surrounded by big industrial buildings.
The date on the wall of my old house says 1875
Humm. Maybe I read the date wrong. . . But the only other date would be 1673.i'm not seeing the picture.
unlikely to be canal related if they were built in 1875 (could be a re-building date, though) - the canal shut in 1836 and most of the course was used for the london and croydon railway.
railway companies built cottages for their workers, so may be railway.
if you want to tell me where you mean, i might be able to dig up some information.

I thought I had looked up the history before when I lived there, or maybe a neighbour told me. I remember looking at maps. . . But that was 20 years ago. Ulp.
That's interesting. Not like the railway cottages in an empty field which I thought I saw. Maybe I saw the railway cottages that are now gone.the ones (now) on Spencer Place, just off Gloucester Road?
Would go with 1875.
Not there on 1871 map

but there by 1897.

some 'railway cottages' marked (not there any more)
so no obvious clues as to why or where - or who Spencer was.
reference on a family tree thing of someone living there in 1901 who was a 'painter and paper-hanger' so not obviously a railway employee.
dunno.
We (the Woodcraft Folk) had our own wassail at the orchard at South Norwood Lake on MondayThis Addington is so new it hasn't even been invented yet!
I know a few people enjoy a wassail ... This is a local one in Addiscombe Railway Park which might be an interesting stroll for some people interest in Croydon history and transport

friendofdorothy I am looking at you!
I live a couple of minutes from the old Addiscombe terminal station and am often around many of the areas in this video, so I probably find it a bit more exciting than most.
The trial continues.
