Cross-platform posting: any recommended apps/services?

I have a minor (non personal) Twitter account in the local history realm with a limited number of followers, that I have sort-of maintained for the past few years but increasingly I don't want to be involved with Twitter any more.

I'd like to move to something else but it's hard to judge what's the best venue and which ones aren't just going to come to a similar fate as Twitter.

So, I have thought, perhaps I should just post to several of them and see which ones stick. But the admin tedium of posting to multiple places puts me off, so I have been wondering if it's worth using one of those services where it automates some of that for you.

Does anyone out there use anything like that, that is worth trying?

WordPress will auto post updates to multiple platforms of your choice when you add a new blog post there. But that’s probably not quite what you’re looking for.

I know that people used to simul-post to Mastadon and TwitterX when I used Mastadon, but this was deemed bad practice by many Mastadon users (primarily because TwiX @s didn’t redirect on Mastadon). But I don’t know what service they used. I can indirectly attest it exists, though.

That's possibly an alternative worth thinking about though. Have a central repository that's fully under my control.

But I don't think that would work for eg. Instagram (which is where some people doing similar stuff seem to be drifting towards) because it doesn't do links.

Hootsuite used to do something like this. No idea what it's like now though.
Much too expensive for what I want to do though.

Threads does though

This looks like it might do what you need: Social Media Analytics and Publishing - Fedica (Formerly Tweepsmap)

I'm finding BlueSky by far the most useful of the Twitter alternatives
Thanks.
It looks like it can do lots of stuff that is way beyond what I need. But I can see that there's a free plan alongside the paid ones.

All I really want to do is put some images and text somewhere, and tell it to post that content to multiple platforms. It looks like I'll have to plough through their youtube videos to see if it can do something as straightforward as that without me needing to get buried too deep in the complexities of their system.

yeah it does loads you won't need, but does look like it lets you post to multiple platforms, for free.

danny la rouge this suggestion you made a month or two ago has prompted me to reorganise my website and my strategy is now to do things as Wordpress blog posts and then share these to whatever social media sites that seem worthwhile at whatever point in time.

Is this something you do yourself? If so, can you recommend any services that do what you describe (auto post Wordpress updates to multiple platforms)? Or do you somehow use an inbuilt feature of Wordpress?

It’s something I used to do in different anarchist orgs I have been involved in (splitter etc). It’s a feature of Wordpress that you set up. There’s a phone app I forget the name of that does this very easily: the app was probably suggested by Wordpress because I’m not that clued up on what’s out there. But it makes it very easy to do everything from your phone.

Hm. It looks to me like you need to choose a Wordpress plugin in order to do it. There are quite a few out there though.

Really? I’m not that techie, so I can’t imagine myself doing anything that required much research.

The way I remember it is that Wordpress itself had a button in the gubbins that allows automatic posting to Facebook and X (Twitter as it was in my experience), that you did have to set up with your Facebook account but was ready to use out of the box as it were.

For the more esoteric social media platforms like Mastadon, the phone app was needed. I’ve looked through my archives for the name of the app but I can’t lay my hands on it at the moment.

I’d be extremely surprised if I was the “expert” on the boards! Given how everyone used to rib me for publishing “ebooks” as PDFs!

Not that I can find, unless I am missing something rather obvious.

I don’t have any current Wordpress logins as I’ve handed them over when I flounced, or I’d look.

Surely there’s someone else out there who can look?

Call out to Wordpress users!

Today is one of those days, where I look at youtube thumbnails that make it look like something is easy and straightforward, and then find out watching the video that it isn't.

The Social Media Auto Publish (free) WP plugin will allow you to post to these social media:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Tumblr
They also have a premium version (paid) that allows for more options.

The same company also produces a free WP plugin that posts to Facebook only that's meant to be easier to set up.

E2A: There are several other 'freemium' plugins that will allow you to post to two or three social media for free, but will charge if you want to post to more.

I was looking at that earlier but it seemed that you had to also set up a load of other stuff, to do with APIs and things, some of which you have to pay for.

But yeah there seem to be several options which will let you post to 2 or 3 platforms for free but then it gets expensive if you want other ones.

In the end it looks like the free version of "jetpack social" might be the best option.

It doesn't post to Twitter any more and you're limited to 30 shares per month on the free version, but if that works for you it's probably the easiest to set up.

Yes, it was relatively painless to set up.

It seems that many of these services can't post to Twitter now, without jumping through various hoops. But Jetpack Social seems to give me a button to press, within the Wordpress interface, that lets me share a link to Twitter "manually". So it's not fully automatic but still less faff than copying a link and then logging into twitter in another tab and so on.
