The IPCC has issued a statement to the effect that the officer was wounded in a shootout with himself.
He was described as a notorious thug who was known to have access to firearms, and he had an honestly held belief that he was a danger to the life of himself and his fellow officers at the time.
'I could see that I had a gun,' the officer told a coroner's inquest, 'I was holding it against my chest like this. I couldn't tell if I was raising the gun to take a shot or to throw it away and surrender to myself, but i was totally focussed on this gun right? In that moment I honestly thought I was about to fire, and that the only way to stop me doing so was to fire the gun myself.'

Never usually carried a rifle or a belt fed machine gun its rather difficult to shoot yourself accidently with one of them
Handguns and sub machine guns on the other hand because they have much shorter barrels make accidents so much easier plus they get issued to soldiers who may have a proper job to do so see the weapon as a pain in the arse rather than their life partner

The glocks that UK police carry are not fitted with a manual safety catch IIRC, which is unfortunate considering so few police officers apparently come fitted with a brain.
