Copper shoots himself.

The officer admitted that although he wasn't sure that he had a gun, he had reason to believe that he did and acted in everyone's best interests in disarming himself.

The glocks that UK police carry are not fitted with a manual safety catch IIRC, which is unfortunate considering so few police officers apparently come fitted with a brain.

No Glock pistol has a manual safety catch a la the old Brownings and Colts (they do have a hammer-drop, though). The pistol is designed in such a way that it can't discharge accidentally, only by pulling the trigger, and guess what? The Glocks use an integrated (multi-part) trigger that means you have to consciously pull it (and Glocks tend to have a heavy trigger-set, more a cable trigger than a hair trigger).
You've got to be some sort of special flower to get an "accidental" discharge out of a Glock. I reckon that copper was either compo-hunting, or one of his oppos put a round in him.

Soldiers in the trenches used to do that rather than face something horrible . Chances are he drew the short straw and was being sent round to investigate alarming sounds coming from Oatens gaff

shit happens
