Genuine question: where exactly does a cold war jet fit into the strategic environment of 2020? Taiwan I get, but who is Morocco going to aim at? POLISARIO, who are basically armed with pieces of fruit?

It's just one of the trappings of modernity and puissance that countries seem to think they need. Countries that realise they don't (Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland, etc.) manage just fine.

so yes if your a mythical country in the middle of nowhere or have heavily armed friends you dont need fighter jets.
