Coddling eggs without an egg coddler

Badgers

Mr Big Shrimp!
R.I.P.
I appreciate that the older Urbanites will know these items as a 'pipkin' and not the 'coddler' as us under 40's do but interested to know if we are still coddling or not? If people are coddling then are they using a proper coddler or simply a small glass bowl? If using a glass bowl is the coddle less effective?

Coddled Eggs

Is there an appreciable difference between a coddled egg and a poached egg?

Says break and season in that link I think.

Suppose could smash egg in big egg cup, sling stuff in it then stand it in a pan?

*retains positive mental attitude*

I thought coddled eggs were more like baked eggs as in you put in a tray of water in the oven with some other stuff in with the eggs.

I may be wrong though.

I'm not being a doubter. I've just never had coddled eggs and it seems they would be much like poached eggs to eat.

I think the fact they're in the water might make em taste different quim. Badgers I reckon it might just take longer in glass, you not got anything plastic? Those tubs from sponge pudding would do the trick.

They are. But the 'poachers' that sit on pans (can't see Badgers link) end up with eggs that are pretty much coddled... they don't touch the water, so aren't poached ;)

I love that you have these and that you doubtless packed them very carefully for your move

Yes --- poached eggs are flat(ter) --- coddled eggs are rounder so the white is more evenly distributed.

(Or at least that's what Miss McKendrick used to tell us in Domestic Science :D).

I've never had a coddled egg but like the idea so I've just bought a coddler on ebay, thanks Badgers for giving me the idea.

Your coddling thread started me on a search for examples of recipes and I'm pleased to report I found this....

I think I may take coddling up.

I know they're sold as poachers...but don't these pretty much coddle eggs? I'm getting well confused.
