.........very minor 60s pop star.........
Thatcher fan. And lots of anecdotes of her being generally horrible to underlings.
Yes I was being a bit harsh, more like a minor 60s pop star instead of a very minor 60s pop star. If she didn't become a TV star she'd be on a cruise ship with Gerry & the Pacemakers and the Tremeloes. Certainly no Janis Joplin. Or even Sandie Shaw.I'm no fan but that's a ridiculous statement
That was the very first thought I had when I saw thread. Did they cover that glorious episode in her life?didn't she defend saville. and rolf.
Thatcher wasn't in power when this series was set and it's not telling the story of the later - and generally quite beastly - Cilla. If it was, I doubt I'd enjoy it very much.Thatcher fan. And lots of anecdotes of her being generally horrible to underlings.
She wasn't a 'very minor' star. How on earth does a three hour drama about a very minor 60s pop star and Blind Date/Surprise Surprise presenter hang together. I could see Dusty Springfield making for a good drama but Cilla! I did see a good review about how it was hook for capturing some excellent period detail but how many times have we seen this era from Beatles films, Train Robbers, Mad Men etc
Black had eleven Top Ten hits on the British charts between 1964 and 1971. In May 2010, new research published by BBC Radio 2 showed that her version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" was the UK's biggest selling single by a female artist in the 1960s
Is that Saville in the above pic?didn't she defend saville. and rolf.
No, that's her husband, Bobby. Is that Saville in the above pic?
To be fair, it's pretty reasonable that they should only appear in a lesser role in the film, given that it was about Cilla and not the Beatles!Sheridan Smith was great, but I thought it was amusing that the Beatles were plainly just a footnote to Cilla's glittering career.
A Sonnet for Cilla
So Cilla is dead. I'm told I should care
But I'm finding it hard to feel pity
She swanned around with her nose in the air
When the Tories raped her native city
That beacon of hope in a sea of greed
A city that stood against Thatcher's might
Where was Cilla in it's hour of need?
Hob-nobbing with Tarby, denouncing their fight
Lennon, Bleasdale, Tomlinson, stayed true to
The Class and the City that had made them
But you never bit the hand that fed you
When push came to shove, you betrayed them
'Rags to riches' just half the story
Fawning, lick-spitle, working-class tory
Considering she never did a single interview where she didn't manage to get the names of at least 2 Beatles and Brian Epstein in somewhere!!Sheridan Smith was great, but I thought it was amusing that the Beatles were plainly just a footnote to Cilla's glittering career.
