Cheap Winter Sun Holidays: your recommendations

A couple of people recommended that to me. Not sure it's that cheap or even possible to get there from where I live.
It is cheap if you look round for deals, and cheap when you get there. Brilliant beaches and a good music scene.

They had an election recently and the tyrannical president lost but refuses to concede, so it might be a bit volatile.

Apparently not. I remember when Jammeh took over in the '90s coup, there wasn't any real danger then and there isn't now. The FO recommends not discussing politics in public but I think it's actually safer to do that now than it has been in a while.

It's a bloody fantastic place to visit.

Still...
no direct flights from Leeds and a quick google says £2K. I don't want to spend much more than £300

is he in Ibiza?

Yah man. It is sunny by day, a little chilly by night, and dead as a dodo. This is not a winter to do Ibiza unless you want a hiking holiday. Has been very wet recently also. All the HUGE building projects going on are now muddy instead of dusty. Many hotels have given up for winter. Bit of a ghost town.

Everybody welcome to share a drink mind :)

Feb' is actually the most expensive time to visit the Canaries. All the mainlanders and Germans get their Vit E in February.

Really? I just did a search and there's loads of return flights to Lanzarote for under 100 Euros.

I am also looking to go somewhere warm. Similar criteria to Orang Utan but going at the end of this month.

Been searching and will prob go to Hurghada. I just want sun, read my book, snorkle and relax. Been looking today but got couldn't choose a hotel but good to know there is a flight with a date that suits.

I wouldn't do Gambia right now - Gambian friend at work was telling my about the political situation at the moment and it sounded rocky. She had been due to go out for a couple of months to do a project around FGM but she's not booked her flights and is waiting to see what develops.

Dahab is sooooo much nicer. If you do go to hurghada, it's easy to get a bus to Luxor, where you can visit ruins and take a felucca down the nile.

Interesting article here about when to buy flights on the cheapair site: 47days is the best time.
I think this is about right but companies like EasyJet & Ryanair do more complicated things so I guess it works more for long haul.

Avoid Gambia, I was chatting to someone who visited recently and the amount of street hassle was OTT and they were even kind of fleeced by their own guide on a boat trip. Sounds way too much bother for a bit of sun.

Anyone suggested Madeira yet? Someone who reads here reminded me I have always wanted to visit. Any experiences for winter?

After a week back at work and commuting in the dark cold wet I relented and am off to Thailand's Andaman coast again in February. Can't wait.
There's some great suggestions here but I find there's just more to do there. The 47 days flight booking rule seems to hold true.

I fucking hate looking for holidays. I only want a few days in Barcelona in April or May and I can't find anything for less than £600.
Maybe I'm shit at searching, maybe I'm right or maybe I'm bus grumpy but that seems a bit steep...

(Am probably a boring bastard but..) ...I can spend hours online searching for holiday accommodation. Can't leave any villa/apartment/stone unturned in case I miss a bargain. Is it just for you? Booking.com has budget singles from approx. £150 for four nights or double rooms for same period at £280. Or this, loft apartment:

Borne Pop Art Loft D

(Apologies if I'm appearing a bit over-enthusiastic here ...but was searching similar for myself and all on work's time anyhow ;) )

:hmm: You can get return flights to Barcelona in April for about £50 return if you're flexible on dates. You'll easily find decent accommodation for less than £100 a night.

Shout if you need some help.

Yes Dahab is lovely but nothing much coming up for there but will keep my eye out. I have been lucky to have visited Egypt a few times and spent a few days on a felucca when I was in Aswan.

Just sent off for my passport today, so should be looking to book for late Feb/March. Just want to go to an off season resort with lots of sunshine and no one to bother me.

Canary Islands is just the ticket for a cheap break in the sun. You'll have guaranteed sunshine at this time of year, for very cheap (and can be quite pleasant too). I was looking at Portugal yesterday, but too cold even for March. You won't have that problem in the Canaries. Can be a tad off in February but even then, its pretty good (17 - 22 degrees).

I'm still not booked, want to fly March 19th/20th ideally from Brum to Egypt. I have found a holiday to Hurghada all inclusive but I do keep looking at Dahab. Found a hotel I like but I cannot find a direct flight, suddenly the 5 hour flight turns into 13 hours with 2 stopovers!
