Cheap Android phone recommendations

This looks as good a place as any to ask my clueless phone question.
My son's phone broke, I had an old Samsung that I've given him to use. It works fine everywhere except in his bedroom where it won't stay connected to the WiFi.
All our other phones and devices stay connected to the WiFi in his room so what gives?
My son starts his day at 5am so every morning at the moment is a 5am WiFi problem that I can't solve and a meltdown.

Need more info.
How old is the phone?
Is son's room the furthest away from the router?
It's our a signal strength issue?
Can he use mobile data instead?

No idea, oldish, but stays connected to WiFi everywhere else.
Not the furthest from the router but further than the living room which is the other room he uses it.
It seems to be a signal strength issue but his previous oppo and my android and his Amazon fire work fine in there.
Mobile data not an option for tomorrow or long term.

I feel like the other devices can hold a WiFi signal from further away because they're newer. Would that make any sense?

A second hand Oppo. If you can afford one you should be able to get the Find X5 Pro for up 200 to 300 quid. Not exactly cheap but it will be getting the Android 15 update.

Its a cracking phone and the camera blows similar Samsung and iPhones out of the water. Especially in low light.

Avoid anything by Sony. I lile them personally but network connections on them are really poor.

In theory, but 4g antenna is just as efficient (if not moreso) as the 2G antenna, and 2g is being switched off across the country as we speak.

Having just 4g for both is best for battery. A lot of money has been spent to blanket the country in 4g signal.

2G is very slow and isnt secure. Avoid it like the plague and as mentioned is in progress of being decomissioned. Also 4G is more secure than 3G and should really be the minimum standard for everyone now unless you are unfortune enough to live in a dead zone.

If you've got an attacker targeting you who can exploit weaknesses in 3g, I'd argue you probably have greater problems.

What's between his room and the router? Between you and his room when you say you're sat a few feet away?

A WiFi booster is my suggestion in a hallway or room nearby his that gets full signal.

Obvs try updating everything, rebooting it, try some software like Fing to check signal strengths etc, is the phone and/or router using 2.4ghz or 5ghz, if both, which works best, and finally, change the output channel of the router to see if any of the others are better than the current one. Neighbours using the same channel can sometimes be a problem.
