Central / S America On A Decent Daily Budget

Voley

🐀
I know it varies quite a bit from country to country but is $40US to $50US a day about right?

Don't mind roughing it a bit but I tend to like a room with my own bathroom these days, three square meals, enough for a few beers and then some extra to travel around with. Rarely buy souvenirs but do like to splash out on a fancy room with a decent view / /a balcony etc once in a while.

Also, is there anywhere really cheap on the Caribbean coast that people particularly recommend? I've always found the best way to stretch my money's to stay still in one place I really like. Any recommendations for somewhere to chill out in a hammock by a beach, preferably with some decent snorkelling nearby?

I'll be going for 6 months at least but might stay out there longer if I like it enough.

You want Tairona National Park :)

Snorkelling's not too great as the water's notorious for it's rip; lots of deaths there but it's incredibly beautiful.

Yeah, Tulum looks nice. Good beaches, ruins to explore. Some cheap beach hut type places that look my kind of thing. Sounds nice. :)

$40-50 a day sounds ample for most places.

The beach at Tulum is ace but I didn't think the place was so special that it warranted hanging around for more than a couple of days - although I was there at Easter when it was rammed with people.

Utila off the Honduras coast might be a better bet, and definitely cheaper than Mexico - although I reckon Little Corn Island off Nicaragua is likely to be just what you're after if you're aiming for a long stay somewhere, sadly never made it there myself, (which is one of many reasons I definitely plan to return to that part of the world) but heard plenty of people rave about it.

caye caulker off Belize city.

its not cheap, but you should be able to get basic accom n shit for that money

Ambergirs caye is rich n full of Septics- not a budget place

mexico will be cheaper

Cheers, Yoss.

I'll do a bit of reading around Little Corn.

I'm just looking for one of those places where you can recharge your batteries a bit after travelling for a while. I intend to be on the move for quite a bit but it's always nice to have somewhere to aim for that's got a slow pace and cheap accommodation.

Where's costa rica? Is that in the region? I mention this because when i first came to thailand me and an american mate had a sort of fun rivalry as to who could discover the best places to stay down tao phangan way when we got breaks from work. We both loved the same kind of thing, so we created a sort of synergy in terms of finding new places more quickly.

This was in the 92-94 years and he used to really rate cost rica as being a similar kind of place. I've kept it in my mind ever since, but have yet to make my way over to that side of the planet.

Yeah Costa Rica's in Central America.

Meant to be beautiful if a bit more developed than other nearby countries, from what I've heard. My stepsister lives there - I'll be staying with her for a bit en route.

How do you fund it, if you don't mind me asking? Just by saving up? If you'd rather not say in public pm me, but I'd be interested to know

so I can entertain fantasies of doing it myself :D

It's a long story, soj, I'll PM you.

Can't be mentioning my arms-trading and international people-smuggling ring here now, can I?

Moomoo - Sure. You any good with boa constrictors?

The Pearl Islands off the coast of Panama look good, too:

Not sure if this can be done cheaply, though.

Anyhow, it's good to know there are places to aim for when you need to do nothing for a few days. Travelling through Central America sounds like it can be fairly hard work at times so it's reassuring to hear of places where there's nothing to do but laze in a hammock.

by the way,

My Granny Heats Nice Cherry Pies :)
