Catford and its environs

Hollis

bloody furious
Yes Jezza I know.. :p

Anyway.. anyone recommend any decentish boozers.. I'm looking for a lively Saaf London vibe.. maybe a guy tinkling the ivories... etc.

You know the score..

I used to quite like The Rising Sun (although that's Rushey Green rather than Catford but tbh they run into each other and hard to tell the difference). Didn't like the Catford Ram much.

Long time since I visited either though, so probably only marginally more in terms of first hand experiences so far ...

edit: have emailed a couple of friends that live in Hither Green/Ladywell so will post further if any strong recs.

There's a good pub towards Lewisham (by Lewisham Hospital) which has a fine selection of ales.

When I remember what it's called I'll let you know.

Reply from friend in Ladywell .....

In Catford ? Are you mad? ……….. Many moons I used to go to the Catford Ram inside the shopping arcade but couldn’t say what it is like now. My local wine bar – Masons – next to Ladywell Station is fine – nice ambience and you can drink anytime of the day I think. The food is very good but over-priced for the area = West End Food at West End prices!

Erm, well, think of it as a rec for near Catford :)

ermm I don't drink round there that much, most times I have had a drink there it's been in the Catford Ram, which is alright, nothing special though.

Reply from friend in Hither Green:

**** often drinks at the Fox and Firkin in Rushey Green. That's ok but can be noisy. I have also drunk at the Coach and Horses near Lewisham hospital and there is another pub called Hotshots just opposite.

If you travel a bit further there is a nice pub on Burnt Ash Lane. Just go up Brownhill Road from Catford and turn right onto Burnt Ash Lane. Can't remember the name but it is a Youngs pub quite a bit up the road on the left with a big car park.

The Jordans, one of only two pubs in the area I would drink in, the other being the Dacre Arms off Lee High Road.

DON'T DO IT
Catford is poo
went to the copperfield? by catford bridge station once with a non white person and got blatant evil looks and sneers
cunts

I've lived in Hither Green and in Lewisham.

I liked Lewisham and like crap pubs with sticky carpets, not tarted up boring drinking halls

I really wouldn't bother TBH

I did like Wetherspoons on Lewisham High Street, Cheap, OK beer and loads of mad folk to watch, it's like telly :)

I was going to say that one, I used to go there with my Brother in Law when it was a Hobgoblin, thing is, it was pricey, had no soul and was always full of the don't talk to folk you don't know brigade.

Pretty shite IMO

It's also a coppers' pub, if that makes a difference.

what more proof does one need of the enduring crapness of catford, if you have to go all the way to catford for a pint? :p
umm, there ain't no outstanding boozers in catford - all much of a muchness, but I quite like the copperfields

The Coach and Horses (mentioned earlier) gets a truly terrible writeup on Beerintheevening ...

Can't trace a Google reference for Jordans, not easily anyway ...

To be honest the best bet (AFAIK) is the Wetherspoons at the Catford end of Rushey Green.

Which one is the 'Copperfields'??

Come in mid June for the Catford Beer Festival :p

I'm not from Catford, as far as I'm concerned, Catford is practically in Kent!!

But that link for the Jordan sounds pretty good, may check it out when we're in the area next ... if ever ... :p

I'm sad to say that I find Catford and Lewisham to be utterly depressing shitholes devoid of any culture or variety to speak of. When the best pub in the centre of a town with a population of 300,000 (Lewisham) is a Wetherspoons, it speaks volumes. Similarly, about the best pub in Catford I've been to is probably The Goose On The Green, which again is a chain. Why can't they do something about that whole area?

With you here! Went to school in Rushey Green and worked in Catford for a few months. Most depressing.

If I were Hollis, I'd go to Blackheath tbh.

Absolutely - it's only a mile or so off to the side of Lewisham, with at least two decent public houses on the heath (the Princess Of Wales and the Hare And Billet) plus a cluster of okay ones in the village.

The Crown's not bad either - at least compared to anything in Catford. Plus there's a Zero Degrees micro brewery in the village:

Much more fun. Could go for a pub crawl round the Heath.

Plus live music 'n' stuff at Blackheath Halls:

Kinkajou are good when they're on

Yeah, that's not bad actually - I went there for my sister's birthday three years ago.

The Railway is quite good too, although it seems to change hands every other week these days and gets unbelievably wadged at weekends. Blackheath would indeed be perfect for a pub crawl, being small and intensely concentrated with regard to pubs etc.

I'm surprised there aren't many late licence bars/clubs though - about the only one I can think of is a small place underneath Cafe Austin that I went to ages ago. I'm not sure if it's still there or not though...

royal standards cool for food too, plus there's music in the o'neill's

Quite a good idea for a London walk. Start off at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, walk up through Greenwich park via the Observatory for piccies, walk across Blackheath (maybe with some kite flying  ) then do a crawl for the rest of the afternoon/evening :)

Yeah, but the Standard's in Vanbrugh Park ... other side of the Heath, not quite as convenient for a crawl? But maybe good as a starting point cos near 422 and 108 bus stops from North Greenwich tube. I s'pose.
